HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/3/10) – The Colgate women's soccer team experienced its second loss of the weekend on Sunday afternoon when it fell to Cornell 2-0 on Van Doren Field in its last non-conference match of the season. The Raiders (3-9) will play the remainder of their regular season games against Patriot League opponents.
The first half of the game started off slow with both teams playing the majority of their game in the midfield with no serious attempts on goal. As the half continued, it was Cornell that found its offensive rhythm first and eventually found a break in Colgate's defense in the 25th minute of the game when a Cornell player shot the ball past the Raiders' goalkeeper to give them the 1-0 lead at half time.
The game became more physical in the second half, resulting in three yellow cards and several stern warnings from the referee. Colgate continued to put pressure on Cornell's defense, creating several corners and some good plays, one of which was a volley that hit the cross bar midway through the half. However, despite a flurry of last minute attempts by the Raiders, it was Cornell that found the last minute goal, ending the game with a 2-0 win for the Big Red.
"I thought today's game gave us an opportunity to sort through some things as we prepare for the remainder of the regular season," stated head coach
Kathy Brawn.
Colgate will resume play on the road next weekend when it faces Patriot League opponents Lehigh on Friday, Oct. 8 and then Lafayette on Oct. 10.
