HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/24/10) – The Colgate women's soccer team experienced its first draw of the season on senior day when it tied with Army 0-0 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon. The Raiders (6-10-1) now have a Patriot League record of 3-2-1.
The game was balanced in the first half with both teams creating some threatening opportunities but with no success. Army struck first with a deflected shot from the top of the box that was stopped thanks to a great save from sophomore
Alexis Longwell (McLean, Va.) who
was able to knock it out of bounds. The Raiders returned the favor shortly after with a beautiful shot from senior
Anna Baldwin (Woodbury, Conn.) that hit the crossbar, saving the Black Knights from what would have been an incredible goal. However by the end of the first half the game remained scoreless.
In the second half Army continued pressure Colgate's defense, playing majority of the half in the Raider's half, but some solid defense from the Colgate backfield was able to keep the team in the game and send it into overtime.
Both overtime periods mirrored the first two halves, with the Raiders' best opportunity coming in the last few seconds of the first period when junior
Danielle Wessler (Port Republic, N.J.) attempted to slip a crossed ball past Army's keeper but it went just wide of the post. With no goals in the second period, the game came to a close with neither team able to find the back of the net.
“Our players responded well to a physical, hard working Army team,” stated head coach
Kathy Brawn. “We battled for the entire 110 minutes of the game and created some great chances. Now we will focus our efforts on Bucknell, where we will face another intense challenge.”
Colgate will play its final regular season game against Patriot League foe, Bucknell, on Saturday, Oct. 30 in Lewisburg, Pa. The team must win this game in order to secure a spot in the Patriot League tournament.
