HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/23/10) — Colgate junior running back
Nate Eachus (Drums, Pa.) ran for 155 yards and scored two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as the Raiders fell to Holy Cross, 31-24 Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium.
Colgate trailed 24-7 at halftime and was able to tie the game 24-24 with 6:37 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Crusaders responded with a touchdown pass from Ryan Taggart to Bill Edger with :05 remaining to win in Hamilton, for the first time since 2000.
Eachus carried the ball 29 times for a game-high 155 yards and caught three passes for 24 yards, while senior quarterback
Greg Sullivan (Monroe, N.Y.) completed 16-of-28 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown. As a team Colgate gained 356 yards of total offense, while holding Holy Cross to 248 yards.
Holy Cross (4-4, 1-1) opened the scoring with a quick two-play, 15-yard drive after recovering a fumble during a Colgate punt return. Holy Cross quarterback Mark Tolzien then found Freddie Santana open on a crossing play for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Eachus then fumbled on the Raiders next possession, which was recovered by the Crusaders Anthony DiMichele on the Raiders 34-yard line. Colgate's defense held Holy Cross to a 22-yard field goal by Rob Dornfield to keep the score 10-0.
Colgate (4-3, 1-1) got on the board for the first time when Eachus capped off a four-play, 56-yard drive with a 35-yard touchdown run to make it a 10-7 game with 2:16 remaining in the first quarter. Holy Cross responded immediately with a 93-yard kickoff return by Andrew Zitnik for a touchdown to go up 17-7 through the first quarter. The Raiders out-gained Holy Cross in total yards 128-to-58, but had two turnovers and a kickoff return to fall behind 10 points.
Holy Cross added to its lead with 3:51 remaining the second quarter when Tolzien found Luke Chmeilinski open in the back of the end zone for a seven-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-3 to give the Crusaders a 24-7 lead at the half.
Colgate opened the third quarter with a 23-play, 97-yard scoring drive capped off with a two-yard scoring run from Eachus to bring the Raiders within 10 points, 24-14. The scoring drive took 10:55 and was the longest drive of the season for Colgate.
Senior defensive end
Lamont Sonds (Hampton, Ga.) then recorded a safety during the Crusaders next possession to make the score 24-16 at the end of the third quarter. Colgate then put together a 16-play, 66-yard scoring drive capped off by a five-yard touchdown pass from Sullivan to senior
Doug Rosnick (Longhorne, Pa.) on 4th-and-goal to make it a 24-22 game. Colgate was then successful on the two-point conversion as Sullivan connected to Rosnick, who dove past the pylon to tie the score 24-24.
Sophomore linebacker
Patrick Friel (St. Charles, Ill.) led the Raiders with a career-high 12 tackles, while Sonds recorded four solo tackles including the five yard sack resulting in a safety.
GAME NOTES: Eachus has rushed for more then 100 yards in six games this season. With the 155 yards Eachus became just the sixth running back in Colgate history to record 3,000 or more yards in his career. Freshman wide receiver
