HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/9/10)
- Senior guard Kyle Roemer (Martinez, Calif.) scored nine of his 26 points in overtime as Colgate rallied back to defeat Army 68-58.

Colgate has now won four straight games to start the New Year and has defeated Army in 10 of the last 11 match-ups.

The Raiders trailed until sophomore forward Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) made a layup to give Colgate a 50-49 lead with 1:09 left in regulation, but Army quickly responded with a three-pointer to take a 52-50 lead. On the other end, Roemer was off the mark on a three-point attempt, and Army rebounded the ball. Junior guard Joe Hoban (West Chester, Pa.) then fouled Army guard Marcus Nelson, who made one of two free throws.

Now, trailing 53-50 with 23 seconds remaining in regulation, Hoban found Roemer alone on the top of the key for a wide-open three-pointer that tied the score. Army forward Cleveland Richard then attempted a layup in traffic, but was blocked off the backboard by senior forward Ben Jonson (Dallas, Texas) as the buzzer sounded.

Roemer opened the overtime session with five consecutive points after nailing a three-pointer and two free throws. Army did not score in overtime until Chris Walker made a layup with 1:57 remaining. The Black Knights played great defense on the other end and forced Jonson to air ball a long three-pointer, but Roemer was left alone under the basket and grabbed the rebound to make a layup as the shot clock expired. Gyawu then calmly made two free throws to give Colgate a seven-point lead.

After a three-point play Army added the full-court press, but Colgate was able to advance the ball to the frontcourt, as Gyawu was wide-open under the basket, but endured a hard intentional foul, which led to two free throws and gave Colgate the ball up 64-58 with 38 seconds left.

Freshman point guard Mitch Rolls (Coffeyville, Kan.) then found Gyawu for a quick layup, effectively sealing the game. Roemer hit two more free throws down the stretch to end the game's scoring.

Army (10-5, 0-1) opened the game by scoring the first seven points en route to a 12-3 run. Behind the efforts of Roemer and sophomore center Nick Pascale (DeWitt, N.Y.) however, Colgate managed to cut Army's lead down to one twice in the first half. Pascale scored six points in the first half en route to an eight-point, five-rebound night. Richard nailed a corner three-pointer for Army with one-second left to give the Black Knights a 31-27 halftime lead.

Both teams struggled offensively in the early portion of the second half until sophomore guard Anthony Hill (Plano, Texas) nailed a rainbow three-pointer from the elbow to bring Colgate within one point. Nelson responded with a layup, but Hill then nailed another three-pointer to tie the game. Army once again bounced back, this time with an 8-0 run to buoy the Black Knights to a 41-33 advantage. Colgate then responded with a 9-2 run off points from four different Raiders, and the Black Knights held a tenuous 43-42 lead. The second half was evenly matched from that point forward leading to Roemer's game-tying three.

Gyawu scored 15 points, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Jonson led the team with eight rebounds to go along with four points. Hill and Hoban each had six points, with Hoban also grabbing five boards.

Richard led the Black Knights with 20 points and nine rebounds. Miller had nine points and eight rebounds. Army shot just 11-for-31 from the field after a first half where they made 52 percent of its field goals.

Another key to the game was free throw shooting. Colgate made 21-of-26 charity stripe shots for a 81 percent mark, while Army managed to make just 7-of-12 from the free throw line.

Colgate (5-10, 1-0) will now face another tough test when Lafayette comes to town on Wednesday (Jan. 13) at 7 p.m.
