HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/29/2010) – Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) scored twice and Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) turned aside 20 shots as Colgate completed the regular-season sweep with a convincing 6-1 victory over visiting Clarkson, Friday evening at Starr Rink.
With the victory, Colgate, which improved to 10-9-5 overall and 7-4-1 in ECAC Hockey play, sweeps its rival from the North Country for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign. In addition, the six-goal outburst was Colgate's highest goal total against the Golden Knights at Starr Rink since a 6-4 victory on January 5, 1996.
After Colgate successfully killed off a Clarkson five on three in the early stages of the opening period, the Raiders got on the board at 10:48 as Day netted his 14th of the year from Matt Firman (Fayetteville, N.Y.).
Less than two minutes later, Robbie Bourdon (Ile Bizard, Que.) scored what turned out to be the game winner with his sixth of the year from Kevin McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) at 12:11. Colgate would head to intermission holding the two-goal advantage.
The Raiders cashed in on their first of two power play goals on the evening at 2:49 of the second. Jeremy Price (Milton, Ont.) and David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) teamed to find Day and the junior lit the lamp for his 15th of the campaign.
Colgate would put the game away with two more goals in a 42-second span of the second. At 11:00, McIntyre sprung Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) on a breakaway and the junior lit the lamp for the 10th time this season. Seconds later, Nick Prockow (Montreal, Que.) centered a pass from behind the net to Sean Carty (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and the senior chased goalie Paul Karpowich from the game with his first goal of the year at 11:42 with a shot from the slot. It was Carty's first goal since March 22, 2008 versus Cornell in an ECAC Hockey Tournament consolation match-up in Albany.
Evin's shutout bid ended at 9:08 of the third as Clarkson's Brandon DeFazio scored his eighth of the year on the power play.
Colgate capped off the night scoring at 16:43 as Thomas Larkin (Cocquio Trevisago, Italy) tapped in a rebound off a shot by Bourdon for his third of the year off a five on three. Brisebois also was credited with an assist on the goal.
The Raiders outshot Clarkson 44-21. Karpowich posted 21 saves in 31:34 of action before being replaced by Richie LaVeau. The sophomore saved 17 of 18 shots the rest of the way. Evin saved half of his 20 shots in the opening period.
Colgate's power play finished two of seven, while the Raiders' successfully killed off five of six Golden Knight man advantages.
Colgate will return to action Saturday evening as ECAC rival St. Lawrence comes to Hamilton. Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m. at Starr Rink.
