HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/16/2010) –
The Colgate women's swimming and diving team captured firsts in 10 events and broke three Lineberry Natatorium pool records to claim a tight 156-144 victory over visiting Cornell, Saturday afternoon.

For the second consecutive weekend, the Raiders' fate was decided in the final event – the 200 free relay.  Up by seven points, Colgate either needed to win the event, or place second and third to hold off Big Red.  The trio of Emma Santoro (Fall River, Mass.), Sarah Sciarrino (Buffalo, N.Y.), and Kim Siembieda (Narbeth, Pa.) handed it over to Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).  The junior ripped off an anchor leg of 23.45 as the Raiders won the event by .21 seconds with a time of 1:37.39.  The win upped Colgate's record to 5-3 overall and gave the Raiders their 10th consecutive win at Lineberry.

Guyett and Erica Derlath (Garden City, N.Y.) were both triple winners against Cornell, while Lia Kunnapas (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.), Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.) and Santoro all claimed two wins.

The Raiders stormed out of the gate setting pool records in the first two events of the meet.  Kunnapas, Caitie Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.), McGraw, and Guyett erased the former 400 medley relay record that stood since the 2001 season.  The foursome finished with a time of 3:54.46 and bested the previous mark set by Army of 3:55.37.  The winning time ranks seventh on Colgate's all-time list.

Colgate flexed its muscles in the 400 IM as Derlath and Guyett went back and fourth.  The duo finished first and second in the race with Derlath prevailing with a time of 4:27.31, which bettered the former record of 4:27.53 set by Colgate's Alice Garnett in 2001.  Guyett's second place time of 4:27.38 also would have edged the former standard.

The final pool mark came from Kunnapas in the 200 back.  The freshman, who led from start to finish, broke away from the pack on the third fifty en route to posting a winning 2:04.36, which edged the previous mark set by McGraw last season by .07 seconds.

Derlath's other two victories came in the 200 fly (2:07.85) and the 500 free (5:04.54).  For the greater portion of the 500 free, the sophomore was on pace to take down the pool record, but fell three seconds short in the end.

Trailing by six at the first intermission, McGraw got things rolling out of the gate by winning the 100 free (52.65).  After Kunnapas' feat in the 200 back, Santoro claimed the 200 breast (2:24.96) to give Colgate three wins in a row.  The other victories came from Guyett in the 100 fly (57.88) and Kim Pilka (Great Falls, Va.) in one-meter diving (244.72).

Colgate had five additional second place performances on the afternoon, two coming from McGraw in the 100 back and 100 IM.  Santoro placed second in the 100 breast; Siembieda was second in the 50 free and Pilka finished runner-up in three-meter diving.

The Raiders return to action next Saturday afternoon as they travel to take on Binghamton.  The meet starts at 1 p.m. in Vestal.
