HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/27/09) - Freshman
Sarah Henderson (Rochester, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal as the Raiders dropped visiting Columbia, 1-0 on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Van Doren Field.
Despite being outshot 17-8, Colgate was able to score early in the first half, gaining a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game. Freshman goalkeeper
Ashley Walsh (Cicero, N.Y.) made 10 saves to fend off the Lions.
The Raiders led off by scoring the game-winning goal just 1:22 into the game. Freshman
Alyssa Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.) sent a cross to the top of the box looking to set-up the play. Henderson earned control of the ball just as Columbia goalie, Lindsay Danielson, started coming out of goal for the grab. With Danielson out from between the posts, Henderson sent a direct shot past the keeper and into the back of the net giving Colgate a 1-0 advantage.
The Lions came out of the break looking to tie the game as the rain continued to steadily fall. Columbia outshot Colgate 11-4 in the second half, almost doubling their amount of shots from the first half (6). Despite several good attempts on goal, the Lions were unable to convert any shots into goals, while Walsh was steady between the posts, making several great saves.
With 16:34 left on the clock, Columbia had one of their best chances to tie the game, if it weren't for a great save by Walsh. Sophie Reister took a soft shot well inside the box but leading scorer Ashlin Yahr touched the ball on its way to goal, looking to deflect it past a diving Walsh. Walsh got a tip on the ball as she dove to her left side and collected the rebound to end the attempt.
The Raiders will open conference action next week when they travel to Annapolis, Md. to take on top Patriot League preseason pick, Navy, Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
