HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/11/09) - The Colgate women's soccer team fell 1-0 at the hands of regional rival Syracuse University Friday night on a rain-soaked Van Doren Field.
The Raiders and Orange battled for control throughout the first half. Syracuse out-shot Colgate 12-2 but only came out with one shot on goal, while the Raiders had two.
Syracuse gained the lead shortly after the beginning of the second half, at 61:47. Freshman Rosina Callisto took what appeared to be a shot on goal from the top of the box, but classmate Jenna Rickan nicked the ball on the way sending it to the right of a diving
Ashley Walsh (Cicero, N.Y.).
The Raiders fought hard over the next 28 minutes looking for the equalizer. Colgate's two best chances to score came in the final six minutes. First, freshman
Sarah Henderson (Rochester, N.Y.) had a breakaway shot just inside the box, but Syracuse's Eliza Bennett-Hattan came forward with the save. A few minutes later senior
Jillian Arnault (Clay, N.Y.) won the ball in between a couple Orange defenders, but her header for the goal went just wide.
Walsh had seven saves for the Raiders while Bennett-Hattan made three for the Syracuse Orange.
Colgate, now 1-3-1 overall, will be on the road next as they take on Marist this Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m.
