Kozlowski, Wejnert Combine for 27 Points in Loss at Army

West Point, N.Y. (2/7/09) -   The Colgate women's basketball team fell to Army, 59-39 at Christl Arena Saturday afternoon.  Sophomores Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) and Tayler Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) led the Raiders in scoring.

Kozlowski registered 15 points and had three assists, while Wejnert put up 12 points and had four rebounds.  Senior Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) also had four boards.  Army's Erin Anthony led all scorers with 18 points and nine rebounds, followed by Laura Baranek with 16 points.

The Black Knights (14-9, 4-4) jumped out to a 7-0 lead just under four minutes into the game with a good three-pointer from Megan Evans.  Colgate (4-19, 0-8) cut that lead to two, a few minutes later after back-to-back three-pointers from Wejnert and Kozlowski to make 8-6.  The Raiders kept it close for most of the first half, allowing Army just a two point advantage with 7:09 left in the half, 18-16.  The Black Knights then went on a 14-4 run to finish the half with a 12 point led, 32-20.

Colgate shot 32.0 percent (8-25) from the floor in the first half and an impressive 50.0 percent (4-8) from behind the arc.  Army shot 50.0 percent (13-26) from both field and three point range (2-4).  The Black Knights out-rebounded the Raiders 17-15 in the opening stanza.

Army gained a 20 point lead, 45-25, in the opening minutes of the second half led by Anthony knocked down seven points in the first four minutes.  They pushed that advantage to 28 points before the Raiders began to chip away at their lead.  Wejnert and Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) scored four points each, and Kozlowski put in another three-pointer to cut the Black Knights lead to 19, 58-39.  With only 1:34 remaining in the game, Colgate's push came too late, as they fell to 0-8 in Patriot League play.

The Raiders finished the game with 33.3 percent (15-45) shooting from the field and 53.8 percent (7-13) from behind the arc.  Army shot 46.2 percent (24-52) for the day and was 7-11 from the free throw line.  The Black Knights topped Colgate on the boards 35-25.

Colgate will be back in action this Wednesday, Feb. 11 when they take on Lafayette in Easton, Pa.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
