Navy Rolls To A 77-64 Win Over Colgate

ANNAPOLIS, MD (2/28/09) – Kaleo Kina tallied a game-high 23 points to lead Navy to a 77-64 win over Colgate Saturday night at Alumni Hall in the final regular season game for both teams.

 

Navy (19-10, PL 8-6) finished third in the Patriot League standings, while Colgate, which lost its fifth straight game, is 9-19 overall and 5-9 in the league for sixth place.  These same two teams will be face off right back at Navy next Wednesday night in a quarterfinal round game in the Patriot League Tournament.

 

Other Midshipmen in double figures were Chris Harris with 17 points and Adam Teague with 12.  They each had four 3-pointers as the home team was 8-of-18 from behind the arc.

 

Colgate was led by junior Ben Jonson (Dallas, TX), who tallied 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Mike Venezia (Westfield, NJ) added 14 points and freshman Anthony Hill (Plano, TX) 12.  Freshman Nick Pascale (Dewitt, NY) had five points and a team-high nine rebounds.

 

Colgate controlled the contest in the first 13 minutes jumping out to an eight-point advantage, 23-15, with 6:08 remaining.  Venezia lead the Raiders with nine points.  Navy, however, heated up from behind the arc with three straight 3-pointers to kick start a 14-0 run for a six-point lead, 29-23, with 3:48 left.

 

Colgate was able to cut the Navy advantage to 35-31 at halftime.

 

After Jonson opened the second half with a 3-pointer, the Midshipmen took control with a 9-1 run.  Colgate was within seven points, 61-54, with 7:22 left, but Navy scored eight straight points to complete the sweep of its home-and-home series against the Raiders.

 

Navy shot 50 percent from the field (26-of-52) and 44 percent from 3-point range, while Colgate managed only 36.5 percent on 19-of-52 shooting and 27.8 percent from behind the arc.  The Raiders stayed in the contest by making 21-of-26 free throw attempts.
