Women's Basketball Weekly Release #6: Raiders Travel to Mid-West

The Raiders will return to the court this week for a three-game road-trip after a 16-day hiatus. Colgate, which last played on Dec. 12, will start the week's action on Monday, Dec. 28, at Loyola Chicago's GentileCenter at 5:45 ET (4:45 CT). The Raiders will then travel to Detroit, Mich. to take on Detroit Mercy on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. The squad will wrap up its winter break trip on Saturday, Jan. 2, facing Ohio in Athens, Ohio at 2 p.m.
 
Scouting the Ramblers
Loyola, of the Horizon League, is currently 5-5 overall and 3-1 at home. The Ramblers most recent loss came on the road against Northwestern, 85-58, on Dec. 22 with their last win coming against Western Illinois, 48-27, on Dec. 20. Three players are averaging just over 10 points per game for Loyola, with Maggie McCloskey leading the way with an average of 10.4 points per game. Keisha Collins is averaging 10.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game followed by Elyse Vanbogaert with 10.2 points and 3.8 boards per game. Ellen Ayoub leads the team in rebounding with 4.6 per game. Head coach Eric Sampson is in his first year at the helm of the women's basketball program after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons.
 
Scouting the Titans
Detroit Mercy will look to snap a nine-game losing streak when they face Colgate on Wednesday. The Titans are 1-9 so far this season after starting the year with a win against Oakland, 74-65, followed by nine straight losses. Brigid Mulroy is the squad's leading scorer with 14.4 points per game, followed by the team's leading rebounder, Yar Shayok, who averages 11.5 points and 9.3 boards per game. Demeisha Fambro rounds out the Titans' top three scorers averaging 10.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Autumn Rademacher is in her second year as Detroit Mercy's head women's basketball coach.
 
Scouting the Bobcats
Ohio, which will face Florida on Monday before hosting the Raiders on Saturday, is currently 3-8 overall with its most recent loss coming against Clemson in overtime, 89-81, on Dec. 19. The Bobcats have wins against George Washington, 70-58, Marshall, 63-48, and UtahValley, 57-43. Leading the way for Ohio is Jenny Poff with an average of 11.4 points per game, followed by Da'Keisha Mann and Jennifer Bushby averaging 8.6 and 8.3 points per game. Kamille Buckner is the best on the boards for the Bobcats pulling down 6.3 rebounds per game and adding 6.0 points. Head coach Semeka Randall is in her second year at the helm of the women's basketball program.
 
Last Time Out
The Raiders fell just short to St. Francis (N.Y.), 59-54, back on Dec. 12. In that game, Colgate now 5-5 overall, was led in scoring by juniors Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Ill.) and Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.). Moser recorded 15 points and nine rebounds while Kozlowski added 10 points and five boards. Sophomore Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J.) had a game-high seven assists for the Raiders.
 
Series vs. Loyola/Detroit Mercy/Ohio
Loyola Chicago- The Raiders have faced the Ramblers just one other time in program history during the 1996-97 season. Colgate won that match-up to claim a 1-0 advantage in the series. 
 
Detroit Mercy- Colgate took on the Titans for the first time last season playing host back on Nov. 29, 2008. The Raiders dropped that meeting, 61-51. The Titans' Brigid Mulroy led all scorers with 16 points followed by Colgate's Sami Kozlowski with 15.  
 
Ohio-This will be the first meeting.
 
Leading the Way
Junior Sami Kozlowski is currently leading the Raiders in scoring with an average of 12.1 points and 2.5 assists per game, while Tricia Oakes adds 10.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Rookie Jhazmine Lynch is also averaging 10.2 points as well as 1.9 steals per game. Krista Moser leads the Raiders in rebounding averaging 6.8 per game along with 7.6 points. Sophomore Candice Green leads the team in assists with an average of 3.0 per game along with 8.9 points..  
 
Weekly Honors
Colgate freshman Jhazmine Lynch was named the Patriot League Anaconda Rookie of the Week for the week ending Dec. 6. This marks the second time this season that Lynch has been honored with the award. The rookie guard had 21 points, five rebounds, and seven assists last week. Lynch scored 12 points and had four assists against Bryant last Tuesday. On Thursday, she picked up nine points, two steals and three assists. The Rookie of the Week award has gone to a Colgate student-athlete 10 times since the start of last season.
 
Top Returners
The Raiders return 10 players to this year's squad, including four starters from the 2008-09 season. Junior Tayler Wejnert returns to the Colgate squad after appearing in 20 games last season. Wejnert led the team in scoring averaging 11.7 points per game, followed by fellow junior Sami Kozlowski who averaged 9.7 points and led the team in steals with 33 in 30 starts with the Raiders. Tricia Oakes led Colgate on the boards as a freshman, pulling down 6.0 rebounds in 22 games. Sophomore Candice Green also started in all 30 games for the Raiders last season averaging 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.
 
Preseason Picks
The Colgate women's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2010 Patriot League preseason coaches and sports information directors poll.  Defending champion Lehigh was selected to repeat this year, with 97 total points and 13-first place votes.  Following the Mountain Hawks in order are American (76, 3 first-place), Holy Cross (76), Navy (54), Bucknell (52), Army (50), Colgate (22) and Lafayette (21). Lehigh's Erica Prosser was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year.
 
Rookie Trio
Colgate welcomes three freshmen to this year's squad, center Lulu Brase of Lake Wylie, S.C., guard Jhazmine Lynch of San Diego, Calif., and guard Rebekah Ward of Montreal, Que.
