HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/12/09)
-- Stony Brook guard Muhammad El-Amin scored 18 points as the Seawolves defeated Colgate 66-55 on Saturday at Cotterell Court.

Stony Brook (7-3) led 54-53 with just under three minutes remaining when El-Amin made a crucial three-pointer as the shot clock expired to begin a 12-0 run. Dallis Joyner made two consecutive layups and three Seawolves combined to make five three throws down the stretch to put the game out of Colgate's reach.

Senior guard Kyle Roemer (Martinez, Calif.) scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Colgate in both categories. Sophomore forward Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) scored 15 points and freshman point guard Mitch Rolls (Coffeyville, Kan.) connected on a trio of three-pointers for a career-high nine points. Rolls also pitched in with a team-high four assists.

Colgate held six-point leads on two separate occasions in the first half. A three-pointer from freshman point guard Anthony Hill (Dallas, Texas) capped a 6-0 run that gave Colgate a 15-9 lead. Later in the half, Gyawu converted on a three-point play, giving the Raiders a 21-15 advantage with 10:58 remaining. Stony Brook responded with 10-2 run, as El-Amin chipped in five points during that stretch. The Seawolves took a 32-31 lead into halftime.

Roemer opened the second half with a three-pointer from the wing, beginning a nine-minute stretch where the lead changed hands four times. Roemer had a great second half, scoring 14 of his 18 points, but the rest of the team shot just 25 percent in the last stanza. A layup from Chris Martin gave Stony Brook a 46-44 lead with 9:37 remaining, a lead which the Seawolves did not relinquish. Colgate climbed back to within one point on two occasions, climbing to within 54-53 after a Gyawu layup. On the ensuing possession, good Colgate defense forced Stony Brook to inbound the ball from the baseline with one second left on the shot clock. However, El-Amin then received the baseline pass and hoisted a heave from the top of the key that rattled through the net.

Turnovers were a big factor in this game. Stony Brook had a season-low six, while Colgate amassed 16.

Colgate (0-9) will host UTSA on Sunday, December 20 at 7 p.m.
