HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/28/09) - Colgate's five-game winning streak to open the season, which was the best start in program history, ended today with a 61-43 loss against Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). The Raiders are now 5-1 overall while the Blue Devils improve to 2-3 this season.
Junior guard Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) led the Raiders with 14 points, including 3-6 shooting from three-point range. CCSU forwards Kerrianne Dugan (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Leanne Crockett (12 points, 10 rebounds) each posted double doubles to lead the Blue Devils offense.
The first half was closely contested, with neither team taking a lead of more than five points. Colgate led 13-8 with 8:58 left after a three-pointer from sophomore point guard Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J.),but the Blue Devils responded with a 10-2 run. Kozlowski ended the half with a three-pointer as time wound down, cutting CCSU's lead to 27-25 at halftime.
Poor shooting doomed the Raiders in the second half, as Colgate shot 3-29 in the final 20 minutes. Colgate did not score a point in the first 7:37 after halftime, letting CCSU jump out to 36-25 lead. Junior forward Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) broke the scoreless streak with two free throws, but a 13-4 CCSU run sealed Colgate's fate.
Green scored nine points and three assists, and sophomore center Tricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) pitched in eight points and seven rebounds off the bench. Moser also grabbed seven boards to go along with six points. For CCSU, Gabrielle Ogelsby scored 10 points off the bench, one of four players in double figures.
The Raiders shot 19.3 percent for the game and 62.5 percent from the free throw line. CCSU finished with 34.5 percent shooting and dominated the boards 54-38.
The Raiders will finish their two-game home stand against Bryant University (1-3) this Tuesday, Dec. 1st at 7 p.m.
