Women Earn Patriot League Tournament Berth with Win at Army

Alyssa Manoogian earned her first collegiate goal, the game-winner, as Colgate defeated Army 2-1.
WEST POINT, N.Y. (10/25/09) -   With goals from junior Anna Baldwin (Woodbury, Conn.) and rookie Alyssa Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.), the Colgate women's soccer team defeated Patriot League opponent Army, 2-1, and earned a spot in the conference tournament, Sunday evening at Clinton Field.

Army (6-10-2, 1-4-1 PL) was the first to score as sophomore Deanna Clegg knocked in the goal at 13:31. Clegg received the ball from Elizabeth Betterbed, and went on a breakaway taking on Colgate's goalkeeper Ashley Walsh (Cicero, N.Y.) one-on-one, beating out the freshman keeper and sending the ball into the left corner.

The Raiders (8-6-3, 4-1-1PL) would tie the game just seconds before the half-time break at 44:54.  Senior Jillian Arnault (Clay, N.Y.) found Baldwin right in front of the goal, getting the ball to the sophomore forward who sent a header past Army's Monica Lee and into the right side of the goal.

Neither team was able to reach the back of the net during the opening minutes of the second half, as Walsh held off the Black Knights with five saves in second session.  With less than nine minutes remaining in the game, Manoogian collected her first collegiate goal putting in a shot from about 16 yards out to earn the game-winning goal for the Raiders.  Freshmen Jillian Kinter (Newburyport, Mass.) and Avery Atkins (Dallas, Texas) had assists on the goal.

“I was pleased with our players' ability to turn things around after a very sluggish start,” stated head coach Kathy Brawn.  “We always know Army will battle to the end, and nothing short of intense determination will beat them.  I continue to be proud of our players and how they represent Colgate soccer.”

The Raiders will host their final regular season match next Saturday, Oct. 31st against Bucknell over Colgate Family Weekend. Game-time is slated for 4 p.m. on Van Doren Field.  Colgate will have a chance to host the conference tournament if they defeat the Bison next weekend.
