Colgate Women Remain Undefeated With Victory Over Binghamton

Beverley Walker was a quadruple winner in her final home meet of her career
HAMILTON, N.Y.  (1/24/09)  – Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.), Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.), and Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.) were quadruple winners and Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was a triple winner as the Colgate women's swimming and diving team remained undefeated with a convincing 216-82 victory over Binghamton, Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium.

Colgate, which upped its record to 7-0, captured firsts in 14 of 16 events; posted the top two spots in six races, and swept the top three places in five others.

Walker, Murphy, Marchi and Bottger, all performing in their final home meet at Colgate, teamed to get the Raiders off to a strong start in the 200 medley relay.  The foursome posted a 1:47.63 to win the event ahead of Colgate's second team of Sarah Button (Mendham, N.J.), Caitlin Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.), Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), and Elora Apantaku (Wilmette, Ill.), which finished second at 1:52.51.

Walker gained her other victories in the 100 back (58.65), the 200 back (2:09.18), and then teamed with Bottger, Murphy and Marchi to win the final event, the 800 free relay (7:50.24).

Murphy claimed the top spots in the 100 breast (1:05.27) and 200 breast (2:22.16), while Bottger swept the sprint free events with winning times of 24.36 in the 50 and 52.27 in the 100.  Marchi's individual victory came in the 100 fly (58.33) as she edged Guyett (58.58).

Five other Raiders captured first place finishes – Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.) won the 200 free (1:54.51); Erica Derlath (Garden City, N.Y.) captured the 200 fly (2:07.61); Jenna Daly (Garden City, N.Y.) won the 500 free (5:10.90); Curran claimed the 400 IM (4:45.91), while Becky Fisher (Cooperstown, N.Y.) posted 206.85 points to win three-meter diving.

Colgate got 10 other second place efforts versus the Bearcats, two coming from freshman Emily Peck (Brooktondale, N.Y.) in the 200 free (1:54.64) and in the 100 breast (1:09.63).  Other runner-up finishes included Button in the 100 back (1:00.95), Marchi in the 200 fly (2:07.83), Apantaku in the 50 free (25.38), Emily Kelly (Potomac, Md.) in the 100 free (54.65), Guyett in the 200 back (2:10.87), Derlath in the 200 breast (2:31.35), McGraw in the 500 free (5:16.01), and Erika Mortenson (Chesterfield, Mo.) in the 400 IM (4:50.77).  The foursome of Derlath, Daly, Peck, along with Courtney Callahan (Tarrytown, N.Y.) teamed to finish second in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:56.35.

Colgate returns to action, Sunday afternoon at the University of Massachusetts.
