LEWISBURG, Pa. (10/18/08) - The Bucknell Bison grabbed an early lead to defeat Colgate University women's soccer team, 3-1, in Saturday evening action at the Bison Varsity Soccer Field at Holmes Stadium.
The Raiders are now 5-9-1 overall and 2-2 in the Patriot League and are tied with Bucknell for fourth place in the conference.
The Raiders outshot Bucknell 8-4 in the first half of play, but the Bison were able to score an early goal 27 minutes into the game off sophomore Christa Matlack who netted her sixth goal of the season. The Bison headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Bucknell opened the second half with another goal from junior Chelsea McGorry. Colgate's freshman goalkeeper
Rebecca Michlin (Southington, Conn.) had three saves in the 63
rd minute of play to keep it a 2-0 game.
Raiders' freshman midfielder,
Danielle Wessler (Port Republic, N.J.), netted Colgate's only goal of the game at 65:22, after
Monica Jensen's (Boxborough, Mass.) initial shot was blocked on the goal line. Wessler got the rebound ball and knocked it in to cut the Bison lead 2-1. Bucknell responded just 18 seconds later when lead scorer Jennifer Devarics got the insurance goal for the 3-1 win.
Michlin had seven saves in the Colgate loss. Bucknell just barely outshot the Raiders 17-15.
Colgate will face two more conference opponents on the road before returning home Nov. 1 for their final conference game of the season against Navy. The Raiders next take on Lafayette on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
