Angela Marathakis is Colgate’s Assistant Athletics Director and Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services. She earned the promotion to Assistant AD in July 2016 after serving two years as the academic services director.
Under Marathakis' direction, Colgate student-athletes are qualifying for Patriot League and Colgate academic honor rolls at a greater rate than ever before. There were 31.9 percent more student-athletes on the fall 2105 Dean's Award list, 17 percent more on the Patriot League Fall Academic Honor Roll and 54.5 percent more on the 2015-16 Colgate Raider Academic Honor Roll.
Marathakis is familiar with the Patriot League, having spent four years at Army as the academy’s Athletic Academic Support Coordinator/Writing Specialist.
While at West Point, Marathakis enhanced academic and athletic relations and increased cultural awareness on post. She paired faculty members with sports teams to help bridge the gap between academics and athletics, meeting frequently with course directors, department heads and professors. Marathakis worked with the lacrosse, football, baseball, wrestling, women’s soccer and softball programs during her time at West Point.
She worked closely with diverse students of varying economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds, counseling cadets who were looking to improve their academic and personal development.
Marathakis also assisted with creation of a Writing Center, and assisted with the First Year and Beyond program to help at-risk and international cadets transition from high school to college.
Before West Point, Marathakis spent three years at Providence as an Academic Skills Specialist for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. There, she worked one-on-one with at-risk student-athletes to create and implement academic strategies for success while using an objective-based model. She also facilitated initial, transfer and continuing eligibility certification in compliance with NCAA, Big East Conference and Providence College regulations.
A native of Ravena, New York, Marathakis graduated from Ithaca College in May 2004 with a degree in sport studies from the school of health science and human performance. She made the dean’s list all four years and earned the Emerson Scholarship, while also playing lacrosse for the Bombers.
Marathakis then earned a master’s in exercise science/sport psychology from the University of Tennessee in December 2005. She began her academic services career assisting both the women’s basketball and women’s soccer programs. Among her research projects was a season-long sport psychology examination of the coaching techniques of legendary women’s basketball head coach Pat Summitt.
