Colgate head coach Matt Karweck has announced the hiring of Jon Sax to his men’s lacrosse coaching staff in September 2019.

Sax joined the Raiders from his alma mater, Tufts, where he was the defensive coordinator for the last three seasons. During his time on the staff, Tufts posted a combined 50-10 record and made three NCAA tournament appearances. The Jumbos won NESCAC titles in 2018 and 2019, going a combined 18-2 in conference play those two years.

“Jon is not only a great coach on the field, but he is exactly the type of coach that knows how to develop great relationships off the field,” Karweck said. “His passion for the game, his pedigree as a champion, his growth-mindset and positive energy, and his desire to work tirelessly for his players is exactly why he will fit in perfectly here with us.

“He loves high pressure, powerful communication, great stances and demeanor, and pushing the field in transition – all things that emulate the Colgate Lacrosse brand.”

Two National Championships
During his playing days at Tufts, Sax helped the Jumbos to two NCAA Division III championships, four NESCAC titles and a 78-12 overall record. In his senior year, Sax started 21 games on defense.

“First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude toward Coach Karweck and Coach Cooper for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to coach at such an incredible athletic and academic institution,” Sax said. “I could not be more excited to help an already extraordinarily high achieving group of young men become the best version of themselves. After interviewing here, it became immediately apparent that this is a program and community that I would be lucky to be a part of.

“My time at Tufts has meant the world to me. I am forever grateful to Coach Daly, Coach D’Annolfo, Matt Callahan, and John Uppgren for making my playing and coaching experience there a dream come true. I am highly motivated to take what I have learned over the past seven years and use it to help attack and accomplish our mission here with Colgate Lacrosse.”

Sax hails from Villanova, Pennsylvania and graduated from Tufts University in 2016 with a degree in Psychology.

Karweck said he has known Sax for three years and developed a friendship during that time over conversations about what it could and should be like to coach people to become the best versions of themselves.

“When we had the opportunity to hire a new coach, Jon was the first person I reached out to,” Karweck said. “We are fired up to have such an amazing mind, an incredible heart, and a true competitor on the field and in the game of life.”
