Colgate men’s hockey head coach Don Vaughan announced the addition of Dana Borges as an assistant coach for the 2018-19 campaign.

"We are thrilled to have Dana Borges join the Colgate Men's Hockey staff. He is a rising star in the college hockey world and one of the brightest young minds in the game,” Coach Vaughan said. “His innovative approach to the sport and his exceptional communication skills are just a couple of the qualities that stood out during the interview process. “

Familiar to the Hamilton community, Borges returns to Colgate after having served as the Raiders volunteer assistant coach for the 2016-17 season.

“He is also someone who knows our student athletes well since he served as our volunteer assistant coach for the 2016-17 season,” added Coach Vaughan. “He gained first-hand experience and an inside look at the Colgate Hockey culture, and perhaps most importantly, he learned from his time here just what it takes to be a successful Colgate student-athlete. This will serve him well on the recruiting trail and we expect that he will hit the ground running."

In his first season with the Raiders, Borges helped lead the Colgate program to a 10-23-3 overall record including four wins over nationally ranked opponents in the 2018-19 campaign. Borges worked extensively with special teams where the Raiders held their opponents scoreless on the power play on 16 occasions.

Before coming to Hamilton, Borges joined the University of Alaska-Anchorage men’s hockey program as an assistant coach from June 2018 through August 2018. In his time with the Seawolves, Borges was responsible for recruiting, skill development, academic oversight, and working with the defensemen and power play squads.

Prior to Anchorage, Borges spent the 2017-18 season at Williams College (MA) as an assistant coach. His primary duties included recruiting coordination, on-ice skill development, video analysis, working with the defensemen/goalies, and coordinating the power play.   Williams College finished the season at 14-11-1 making a run to the conference semifinals.

In his time with the Colgate program in the 2016-17 campaign, Borges was responsible for assisting with all aspects of the program.  Primary functions included aiding in on-ice skill development sessions, practicing planning, video analysis, working with the power play, game day observation, and co-direct video recruiting. While with the Raiders, Borges leadership helped three players to professional hockey careers (AHL, ECHL) following the season.

“Colgate fosters a mindset of excellence on and off the ice,” Borges said of rejoining the Raiders. “I am grateful to be working with the student-athletes, staff, faculty, and Colgate Hockey community that embody this mindset. Thank you Coach Vaughan for affording me this opportunity. It’s great to be back.”

Getting his start in collegiate coaching, Borges spent two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Stonehill College. The Skyhawks went 42-25-8 over his two and a half seasons as an assistant, winning three straight NE-10 regular season titles and the 2016 Northeast-10 Conference Championship.

Over the same time period, Borges has served as the USA Hockey Associate Coach in Chief for the Massachusetts District-Director of ADM as well as a camp coach at the 2016 USA Hockey National U-17 Camp.

From 2009-13, Borges played with the Skyhawks where he served as captain for his junior and senior seasons. Borges was named the Northeast-10 Man of the Year in 2013 as well as a Capital One All-American. He was also awarded the Father Jack McCarthy Award and Edward E. Martin Outstanding Student-Athlete Award from Stonehill College as well as finishing as a semifinalist for the Joseph Concannon Award which is annually given to the Top DIII American-born ice hockey player.
