Slow Offense Halts Raiders at Army

Six of Matthews’ nine points came in the fourth quarter

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Colgate faced multiple scoring droughts throughout the game that hurt its chance to build a comeback, resulting in the team falling to Army, 59–35, on the Black Knights' Kids Day.

COACH BUSH'S COMMENTS
"I was proud of our defensive performance today to hold Army under 60 on their home floor. We will continue to work to grow as a group with our offensive efficiency as we head home to get ready to take on Bucknell in Hamilton on Saturday.

"We are excited to welcome our Women's Basketball Alumnae home to Cottrell Court."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Off the jump, Army's Taylor Wilson scored the first basket of the game. Grace Klag matched the early energy, having her way in the paint to convert the layup.

The Black Knights pulled away with a 9–0 run, holding the Raiders scoreless for six minutes. The run included two 3-pointers and extended Army's lead to 11–2. A 3-pointer by Taye Matthews and a jumper from Madison Schiller put Colgate on the scoreboard, but the Black Knights maintained a 10-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, 17–7.

Early action in the second quarter from Klag in the paint gave the Raiders another layup to chip at the deficit. Army answered with lockdown defense, preventing Colgate from scoring for four and a half minutes as the Black Knights added 11 unanswered points to lead 28–9.

Meabon converted two free throws and a jumper from the elbow, along with Abbey Ferguson's layup, but the Black Knights outscored the Raiders in the remainder of the quarter, 10–6, with Colgate trailing 38–15 heading into halftime.

Schiller opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, followed by a Klag jumper outside the paint, but Army prevented Colgate from scoring for a four-minute stretch to build a 28-point lead, 50–23.

Colgate outscored Army in the fourth quarter, 12–8, led by Matthews' six points. Three additional Raiders contributed points in the quarter, but Army's defense and timely scoring preserved its lead, resulting in a 59–35 victory for the Black Knights.
