MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Colgate dropped a 3-2 decision to Illinois State on Friday in the first game of the Make it Happen tournament. Game 2 against Monmouth was canceled in the bottom of the fifth due to lightning and will not be rescheduled.
Game 1 | Illinois State 3, Colgate 2
Illinois State gained an early advantage in the first inning when Bella Atkinson hit a two-run homer to center field, following a single by Tatum Wolford. This initial lead set the tone for the game, as Colgate found itself trailing in the opening stages.
Colgate's response came in the fourth inning, ignited by
Analisa Raffaelli being hit by a pitch, followed by a single from
Marina Taveras and a walk to
Lily Haluska, loading the bases.
Kayla Martin delivered a double up the middle, driving in two runs to level the score at 2–2.
The Redbirds answered with the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. The Raiders threatened again in the fifth with back-to-back singles from Raffaelli and Taveras but left the tying run on base.
Taveras paced the offense with two hits, while Martin's two RBIs accounted for Colgate's runs. Alexa Acker scattered three hits over two scoreless innings of relief.
Game 2 vs Monmouth Canceled
Colgate was trailing Monmouth 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth when persistent lightning swiped through the area. After a 45-minute delay, the game was called. Because five full innings were not complete, the game was ruled a no contest and will not be made up. Statistics do not count.
