BALTIMORE, Md. – Colgate gave chase throughout the game against Loyola, but the Greyhounds outscored the Raiders in three of four quarters to secure a 58-49 victory Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game began with the Greyhounds striking first, but the Raiders quickly responded with Amarah Streiff's 3-pointer and baskets from Abbey Ferguson and Ella Meabon to take a 7-4 lead.
The teams exchanged leads multiple times throughout the quarter, but the Greyhounds' 7-0 spur enabled Loyola to regain a 13-9 advantage. Streiff's second 3-pointer in the final seconds narrowed the gap to 15-14, as the Raiders trailed by one at the end of the quarter.
Loyola gained momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Colgate 14-6. The Greyhounds added five quick points, but their short-lived run was halted by Meabon's back-to-back jumpers, which trimmed the deficit to 20-18.
However, the Greyhounds pushed a 9-0 run to take a 29-20 lead entering halftime.
Colgate opened the third quarter strong, with Meabon hitting a free throw and Streiff connecting on a 3-pointer. Grace Klag added back-to-back layups to narrow the deficit to 31-28.
Loyola responded with Sydney Bass hitting consecutive 3-pointers to extend the lead to 39-28.
Despite a late push from Colgate — including a 3-pointer by Taye Matthews and free throws from Meabon — the Greyhounds maintained control and carried a 47-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Raiders outscored the Greyhounds 14-11 in the final period. After trailing by as many as 16, Madison Schiller and Streiff each hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 52-42.
A late layup by Christina Midgette brought Colgate within nine, but it was not enough as Loyola secured a 58-49 victory.
