CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 20 Harvard completed a 44-yard Hail Mary and lateral with zero seconds on the clock Saturday night, snatching a 20-17 walk-off win to erase No. 22 Colgate's late fourth-quarter comeback at Harvard Stadium.
With the clock showing zero, Harvard quarterback Charlie Smith launched a 44-yard heave toward the end zone. Teigan Pelletier high-pointed the ball at the Colgate 6-yard line and flipped a lateral back to Nathan Bailey, who sprinted to the pylon for the walk-off touchdown.
The wild finish overshadowed a poised go-ahead drive by Colgate moments earlier. Matt Fogler reeled in a back-shoulder touchdown pass from Jake Stearney with 27 seconds remaining, capping a 13-play, 75-yard drive to put the Raiders ahead 17-14.
In a fourth quarter that started with the score knotted 7-7, Luke Vogeler put Colgate in front 10-7 on a 24-yard field goal with 6:00 remaining – the first of four fourth-quarter lead changes. Harvard answered with a 10-play, 78-yard march capped by a 2-yard touchdown plunge from Seamus Gilmartin to reclaim a 14-10 edge with 2:08 on the clock.
Stearney then orchestrated the two-minute drill, connecting on seven passes and converting three third downs, including Kam Phillips' toe-tapping 20-yard reception on 3rd-and-10 and Fogler's go-ahead score.
Smith responded by completing three quick 12-yard passes to push Harvard across midfield. The Crimson initially set up for a potential game-tying field goal, but a false start penalty backed them out of range with six seconds left, setting the stage for the final-play miracle.
Stearney finished 21-of-39 passing for 188 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while first-year running back Caleb Naumann led the ground game with 88 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries – scoring for the second consecutive week.
Defensively, Trooper Price racked up a game-high 14 tackles, supported by double-digit efforts from Tymir Wynn (12 tackles) and Kenny Langston (10 tackles).
After Harvard opened the scoring on a 6-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, Naumann answered for Colgate early in the second, bulldozing into the end zone on 4th-and-inches to cap an 8-play, 41-yard drive.
Colgate's defense held firm before the half, anchored by a 4th-and-inches goal-line stand from Christian Magliacano and a late interception by Wynn to keep the contest deadlocked at 7-7 at intermission.
