Raiders Fall Short in Overtime to American, 59–56

Matthews game-tying three not enough to secure victory

WASHINGTON, D.C — Colgate overcame a 16-point deficit against American to force overtime, but the Eagles outscored the Raiders 9–6 in the final minutes to capture a 59–56 win.

Taye Matthews, the playmaker of the game, shot 4-for-4 to start the game and generated offense for the Raiders in a time of need. Matthews recorded a new career-high 17 points and a game-tying three with five seconds remaining to force overtime.

Junior guard Ella Meabon showcased her versatility by scoring on mid-range jumpers and layups to lead the team with 20 points. Meabon also contributed four rebounds and a pair of steals. The last time she scored 20 points was against Delaware on Dec. 5.

Madison Schiller scored four points but was an asset defensively, collecting 10 rebounds to match a career-best while adding three steals. Christina Midgette crashed the boards, collecting eight rebounds, a pair of steals, and scored seven points.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH SHANNON BUSH
"I was proud of our team for the fight and reliance we showed after half time to come back in the second half and force overtime after being down 16 in the first half. We will get back to work on how we can put together a full 40 minutes of gritty team defense."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams struggled to find their rhythm early in the game. American took an early lead by scoring a layup and adding two successful free throws. Meabon responded with a layup, and Taye Matthews contributed back-to-back buckets to tie the game at six. However, the Eagles' and-one play gave American a 9–6 advantage at the end of the quarter.

American built a significant lead in the second quarter, finishing with a 34–20 advantage over Colgate. American's Charlotte Tuhy contributed key plays, aiding the Eagles' momentum. Matthews was active, securing points with a layup, but turnovers hindered Colgate's progress. American capped the quarter with a three-pointer, and Abbey Ferguson scored a last-second layup, as the Eagles maintained their double-digit lead into halftime.

Out of the half, the momentum shifted into the Raiders' favor as they initiated a 10–0 run. Meabon, Ferguson, and Midgette, tallied boards to help close the gap to 34–30 while holding the Eagles scoreless for more than four minutes. Despite American's initial 34–22 lead at the start of the quarter, Colgate's defensive pressure and scoring in the paint allowed the Raiders to narrow the gap significantly by the end of the quarter.

Colgate and American matched each other's energy, each scoring a basket. Midgette's early tip-in brought the Raiders within striking distance. Schiller kept Colgate in contention with a fast-break layup, narrowing the gap to a single point. In the closing seconds, Matthews hit a crucial three-pointer with five seconds remaining, leveling the score at 50. Despite attempts from both teams in the final moments, neither side managed to break the deadlock before the buzzer, pushing for overtime.

In overtime, Meabon started strong, quickly scoring with a jumper and a layup to give the visitors a 54–50 lead. However, an 8–0 run by the Eagles sealed the Raiders' fate, despite a late layup by Schiller, leading to a 59–56 conference loss.
