Colgate Earns Thrilling Draw Against George Washington

Ro and Tunney score for the Raiders

HAMILTON - After nearly 84 minutes of scoreless action, a flurry of four goals in the final six minutes concluded in a 2-2 draw in Hamilton on Thursday night.

After the Revolutionaries took a 1-0 lead with six minutes left, Sophia Ro nodded the Raiders equal off a cross from Cate Childers. George Washington looked to have all but won the match with 40 seconds left on the clock but Josie Tunney pounced on a loose ball in the box as leveled the game at two apiece.

COACH HOKANSON'S COMMENTS
"That could be one of the craziest matches I've been a part of in my playing or coaching career. I have to give a huge amount of credit to our team who didn't give up when we conceded so late in the game and found a way to steal a tie from a loss. Happy for Soph to find her first goal tonight and thought Josie thoroughly deserved a goal for her late game performance. Proud of the habit of resilience we can take away from coming back twice but definitely a lot of things to learn from and clean up that put us in those positions. We'll look forward to continuing to grow and have another tough test ahead on Sunday."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Raiders thought they took an early lead but Ana Schremp was called offside.
  • Colgate's best chance of the half came from an Ava McCloskey cross to the foot of Gillian Yonce at the back post. The shot went narrowly wide right of the mark.
  • George Washington fired a shot off the crossbar halfway through the first frame but that was the closest they could come.
  • The Raiders edged the Revolutionaries in shots 3-2 in the first frame but the score remained tied at zero.
  • George Washington rattled the crossbar again with 20 minutes remaining in the match.
  • The Revolutionaries took a 1-0 lead in a long range effort finding the top left corner of the net with under six minutes left.
  • On the second chance after a corner kick, Cate Childers whipped a ball to the back post that found the head of Sophia Ro who emphatically put the ball into the back of the net to equalize.
  • George Washington regained its lead with 40 seconds left on a cross that was placed past the outstretched arm of Ella Poppinga.
  • Josie Tunney got on the end of a bouncing ball and tucked it into the bottom left corner with 20 seconds left to help the Raiders finish the match with a 2-2 draw.
GAME NOTES
  • Sophia Ro scored her first career collegiate goal. Ro is now the third first year to find the score sheet for the Raiders this season.
  • Josie Tunney scored her second goal of the season.
  • Ella Poppinga played all 90 minutes in net and made two saves.
  • Colgate out shot George Washington 7-4 while the Revolutionaries held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.
