Softball Comeback Falls Short at Boston U

Raiders score four in the seventh despite 7-5 loss

BOSTON — A valiant comeback effort for Colgate (10-22, 0-3 Patriot) fell just short in a 7-5 loss at Boston University (22-10, 6-0 Patriot) in the series finale Saturday afternoon at BU's Softball Field.

Analisa Raffaelli and Quinn Livesay registered two hits apiece. Livesay was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored to pace the offense. Jillian Herbst, Lily Haluska, and Mia Cascio each drove in a run in the seventh, as Colgate scored four runs in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Boston U was staked a 4-0 lead after scoring in each of the first three frames. The Terriers added a three-spot in the fifth to lead 7-0 through five innings. Colgate's first hit of the game came in the top of the fifth when Amanda DeSantis singled to right center.
  • The Raiders went on to score the final five runs of the contest, starting in the top of the sixth when Haluska roped an RBI double down the left field line to score Raffaelli.
  • Colgate kept climbing back in the seventh, scoring four two-out runs on the strength of four hits – all coming after back-to-back strikeouts opened the frame. Raffaelli sparked the rally with a double to center, and Herbst traded places with a ground-rule double to cut the margin to 7-2.
  • Livesay followed with a laser RBI single that carried to the bottom of the wall in left field, scoring Herbst. After Haluska worked a walk, Cascio drilled a two-run single to center that brought the tying run to the plate with the score suddenly 7-5.
  • Colgate chased BU starter Kasey Ricard, who leads the nation with 13 complete games, and Ava Johnson came in to get the final out of the inning and hold off the Raiders, 7-5.
