Thirteen Colgate Football Notes at Lafayette

Raiders hit the road for final time in regular season

  • Final Road Test | Colgate plays its final road game of the regular season Saturday afternoon when the Raiders visit Lafayette. Colgate is 2-3 on the road this season, with wins over Cornell and Holy Cross. After this weekend, the Raiders return home for their final two contests against Lehigh (11/15) and Bucknell (11/22).

  • Head-to-Head Series | Colgate owns a 48-16-4 head-to-head record against Lafayette. The Leopards have won three of the last five meetings, however, including last year’s 21-20 decision at Andy Kerr Stadium. Before Lafayette’s recent success, Colgate had won five in a row including three straight shutouts from 2017-2019.

  • Comeback Raiders | One week removed from its largest comeback in more than a decade, Colgate once again staged a fourth-quarter rally to beat Merrimack 23-20 in overtime last Saturday. The previous week, the Raiders scored 19 unanswered points to stun Holy Cross 29-28, their largest comeback win since November 2007.

  • Fourth Quarter Defense | Colgate’s defense blanked Holy Cross in the fourth quarter last weekend, its fourth time shutting out an opponent in the final frame this season. The Raiders are 3-1 in those contests against Villanova, Fordham, Cornell, and Holy Cross.

  • One-Possession Battles | The Raiders have played in four consecutive one-possession games, going 2-2 in those contests. The last four games have been decided by a combined total of 13 points. For the season, six of Colgate’s nine games have been decided by seven points or less.

  • Last Time at Lafayette | Jake Stearney as a first-year threw three touchdowns after halftime helping Colgate overcome a 17-point deficit to beat then-ranked No. 13 Lafayette 37-34 on Nov. 4, 2023, in one of the more memorable wins in recent history. Stearney’s walk-off TD pass to Brady Hutchison in OT sealed the comeback victory. The win still stands as Colgate’s last triumph over a ranked opponent.

  • Caledonia Kick Machine | Junior placekicker Luke Vogeler was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts last week, including a season-high 43-yarder in the first quarter and the game-winning 34-yarder in overtime that sealed Colgate’s 23-20 win over Merrimack. The performance earned him Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week.

  • Find Fogler | First-year wide receiver Matt Fogler scored his first collegiate touchdown – barreling into the endzone on a 16-yard catch and run – for Colgate’s first score against Merrimack last weekend. He finished with two receptions for 20 yards to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career.

  • Monster Game for Magliacano | Sophomore linebacker Christian Magliacano racked up a career-high 10 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, an interception, and a pass breakup in Colgate’s 23-20 overtime win over Merrimack. His interception came in the fourth quarter and in the red zone with Merrimack driving inside the 10-yard-line.

  • Swanson Steps Up | Sophomore Reed Swanson has four 100-yard receiving games on the season after going for 134 yards on five receptions last weekend. He has eclipsed 100 yards in three of the last four games, which includes a career-high 183 on 11 catches at Georgetown.

  • Spreading the Wealth | At least eight different players have recorded a reception in three of Colgate’s last five games. Over that time period, three Raiders recorded career-highs in receptions and yards (Reed Swanson, Max Walters, Matt Fogler).

  • Air Raiders | Colgate has recorded more than 300 passing yards five times this season – already the most such games for the program in a single season since at least 2011. Colgate’s passing offense leads the Patriot League averaging 286.1 passing yards per contest with 20 touchdowns.

  • End Zone in the Red Zone | Colgate’s offense ranks second in the Patriot League in red zone efficiency, scoring on 31-of-36 attempts for an 86.1 clip. The defense is also second-best in the league allowing scores on 71.9 percent of their opponents’ chances inside the 20.

  • Lucky Number 13 | Colgate considers 13 to be a lucky number. The University celebrates Colgate Day every Friday the 13th. In 1817, 13 men met in the frontier settlement of Hamilton, N.Y., to found the Baptist Education Society of New York. They are said to have backed up their experiment in education with 13 dollars and 13 prayers, which is why 13 is considered a lucky number at Colgate.

  • With a win the Raiders would…
    • …have three straight wins for the first time this season
    • …jump over .500 in Patriot League play, improving to 3-2
    • …improve to 3-3 on the road this season
    • …record their second straight conference win of the road (Holy Cross)
    • …improve to 25-8-2 all-time on the road against Lafayette
    • …post their third consecutive win over Lafayette at Fisher Stadium
