WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a matchup of two top-15 teams, the Raiders fell in overtime against St. Cloud State by a final score of 3-2 despite goals by
Elyssa Biederman and
Sara Stewart in the opening game of the D1 in DC Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
The opening minutes saw St. Cloud State put pressure on the Raider defense, but first-year goaltender Brooke Davis stood strong, keeping the Huskies off the board and allowing the Raiders to create attacking pressure.Â
Alexia Aubin, Madeline Palumbo and Emma Beauchamp each nearly grabbed the opening goal for the Raiders, though St. Cloud's Emilia Kyrkkö made excellent saves to keep things scoreless.
The Raiders would rue these missed chances when Sofianna Sundelin scored a power play goal from close range at 13:36 off an assist by Payton Holloway to give St. Cloud a 1-0 lead. Colgate answered back right away though, as Elyssa Biederman scored at 15:52, assisted by Alexia Aubin, to level the game at one.
In the final minutes of a chippy first period, neither team was able to cash in on power play opportunities, sending the game to the break tied 1-1.
Despite huge chances for both teams early in the second period, the game remained tied at one, with Brooke Davis and Emilia Kyrkkö continuing their strong performances in net.Â
Halfway through the period, Colgate had to defend a 5-3 power play, which proved to be too much pressure for the Raiders. St. Cloud retook the 2-1 lead at 13:43 when Sofianna Sundelin scored her second goal of the game off of an assist by Payton Holloway.
Looking to respond, the Raiders had several chances in the closing minutes of the period, but weren't able to even the game at two going into the final 20 minutes.Â
Both teams took some time to settle into the third period, but Colgate, looking to get back into the game, struggled in attack due to repeated penalties that forced them to play shorthanded. However, when the Raiders earned a power play with 12 minutes remaining, it proved to be just the chance they needed, as Sara Stewart leveled the game once again, making it 2-2 at 9:53 with a goal assisted by Alexia Aubin.
Neither team was able to score in the final ten minutes, sending a thrilling game to overtime with a score of 2-2.
Just 1:35 into the five-minute overtime period, Sofianna Sundelin beat Brooke Davis one-on-one, completing her hat-trick and giving the Huskies a thrilling 3-2 win in the D1 in DC opener.
