Stats FCS award recognizes nation’s top first-year players

HAMILTON – First-year wide receiver Matt Fogler made waves down the stretch of the regular season, and today was recognized as a Stats FCS Jerry Rice Award finalist for the nation's top offensive rookie.

Fogler becomes Colgate's first finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, which honors the national freshman player of the year in college football's Division I FCS subdivision. Fogler scored all seven of his touchdowns over the final four weeks of the regular season – including two multi-score performances – along with 23 receptions for 413 yards.

The Cincinnati, Ohio, native emerged late in the season, highlighted by his three-touchdown game against Lafayette. He became Colgate's first receiver to catch three touchdown passes in a game since Thomas Ives '18, currently on the Chicago Bears practice squad, grabbed a trio against Georgetown in 2017.

Following his breakout game in Easton, Pa., Fogler scored Colgate's lone touchdown against Lehigh – a 28-yard pitch and catch – before finding the end zone twice in the finale against Bucknell with scores of 37 and 39 yards. In the win over the Bison, Fogler finished with four receptions for 87 yards.

Fogler concluded his first-year campaign fifth on the team in receptions (23), third in receiving yards (413), and second in touchdowns (7). He was a two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week.
