Thirteen Colgate Football Notes vs Merrimack

Raiders look to keep momentum on Family Weekend

  • Home Sweet Home | After playing three of the last four on the road, Colgate returns home for three of its final four contests in the regular season. The Raiders open that stretch by hosting Merrimack in non-conference action Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium.

  • Head-to-Head Series | This is the second all-time meeting between Colgate and Merrimack. The Warriors topped the Raiders 51-17 last October in North Andover, Mass. Marco Maldonado logged a season-high 16 rushing attempts for a team-leading 75 yards in the previous meeting. Jake Stearney threw for 155 yards with a touchdown.

  • Comeback Raiders | Colgate scored 19 unanswered points to stun Holy Cross 29-28 last weekend, its largest comeback win since November 2007 when the Raiders scored the final 31 points after halftime to beat Dartmouth in overtime 31-28.

  • Fourth Quarter Defense | Colgate’s defense blanked Holy Cross in the fourth quarter last weekend, its fourth time shutting out an opponent in the final frame this season. The Raiders are 3-1 in those contests against Villanova, Fordham, Cornell, and Holy Cross.

  • Shaban Shines | Sophomore running back Danny Shaban rushed for a Colgate career high 98 yards on 13 attempts for an average of 7.2 yards per carry last weekend at Holy Cross. His 22 receiving yards upped his total to 120 all-purpose yards on 15 touches.

  • Price is Right | Junior linebacker Trooper Price recorded a career-high and Colgate season-high 15 tackles last weekend at Holy Cross. Seven of those stops were solo, plus he added 1.5 TFLs and a pass breakup. Three of those tackles came on Holy Cross’ final drive that sealed Colgate’s 29-28 comeback victory.

  • Defender Dane | Senior linebacker Dane Picariello has recorded his season’s top two defensive performances in each of the last two games. He posted a career-high 11 tackles two weeks ago at Georgetown before notching nine stops last weekend at Holy Cross. He leads the team with 60 total tackles on the season.

  • Paul-Marie Putting on Pressure | Sophomore Paul-Marie Dogui has made his presence in the backfield with three sacks over the last five games, including a career-high two against Fordham. His three sacks ranks fifth in the Patriot League.

  • Swanson Steps Up | Reed Swanson stepped up with 11 receptions for a career-high 183 yards against Georgetown. His yardage output bested his previous personal-best 113 vs Richmond, and his 46-yard catch in the second quarter was the longest of his Colgate career.

  • Spreading the Wealth | At least eight different players recorded receptions in three of Colgate’s last four games. Over that time period, three players recorded career-highs in receptions and yards (Reed Swanson, Max Walters, Matt Fogler).

  • Air Raiders | Colgate has recorded more than 300 passing yards five times this season – already the most such games for the program in a single season since at least 2011. Colgate’s passing offense leads the Patriot League averaging 291.1 passing yards per contest with 19 touchdowns.

  • End Zone in the Red Zone | Colgate’s offense ranks second in the Patriot League in red zone efficiency, scoring on 27-of-32 attempts for an 84.4 clip. The defense is also second-best in the league allowing scores on 75 percent of their opponents’ chances inside the 20.

  • Lucky Number 13 | Colgate considers 13 to be a lucky number. The University celebrates Colgate Day every Friday the 13th. In 1817, 13 men met in the frontier settlement of Hamilton, N.Y., to found the Baptist Education Society of New York. They are said to have backed up their experiment in education with 13 dollars and 13 prayers, which is why 13 is considered a lucky number at Colgate.

  • With a win the Raiders would…
    • …even the head-to-head series to 1-1
    • …post their second non-conference win of the season
    • …have back-to-back victories for the second time this season
    • …improve to 2-2 at Andy Kerr Stadium this year
    • …cap non-conference play with a win for the second time in three years
    • …start the final month of the regular season with a victory
