ORONO, Maine - A two-goal second period thrusted the Raiders over No. 10 ranked Maine by a score of 3-2 on Friday night at Harold Alfond Sports Arena.
Robby Newton and Max Nagel scored in the second frame to earn Colgate its first win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 23, 2024 when they beat No. 18 Quinnipiac.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first period began with a power play opportunity for Colgate as Maine was penalized for tripping early in the game. Colgate capitalized on the advantage when Michael Neumeier scored a power-play goal, assisted by Isaiah Norlin, putting Colgate ahead 1-0.
Maine responded midway through the period with an equalizing goal from Oskar Komarov at even strength. Shortly after, Colgate faced another challenge as Maine's Justin Poirier found the net on a power-play, giving the Black Bears a 2-1 lead. Despite multiple offensive efforts by Colgate, the period concluded with Maine leading 2-1.
Colgate began the second period with a decisive momentum shift, seizing control early. Just over three minutes into the period, Robby Newton scored an unassisted goal, breaking the tie and putting Colgate ahead. This marked his first goal of the season and set the tone for the remainder of the period.
Later in the period, Colgate capitalized on a power-play opportunity. Max Nagel found the back of the net, with a helper from Neumeier, extending Colgate's lead. This goal proved to be the game-winner as Colgate maintained their defensive strength, preventing the Black Bears from scoring. The period concluded with Colgate leading 3-2.
The third period began with Colgate maintaining a narrow 3-2 lead over the Black Bears. Colgate's defensive efforts were highlighted by Easton Wainwright's blocked shot right at the outset, setting a tone of resilience. Reid Dyck played a pivotal role in maintaining the advantage, making several crucial saves against the Black Bears' persistent offensive pressure.
As the period wound down, the Black Bears pulled their keeper to increase offensive pressure, but Colgate's defense held firm. The period concluded without any changes to the score, securing a 3-2 victory for Colgate.
