Colgate’s Win Streak Snapped at American, 81-77

Woodward Scores Career-High 25 Points in Narrow Defeat

WASHINGTON – American's Greg Jones connected on a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:22 left in regulation and the home team held the lead for good to snap Colgate's five-game winning streak, 81-77, in a back-and-forth battle on Saturday evening inside Bender Arena.

It was a battle of the big men with Jeff Woodward scoring 25 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while adding two blocked shots and two assists. Matt Rogers, American's center and the Patriot League's preseason player of the year, scored 26 points (3-4 3FG) with eight rebounds.

COACH LANGEL'S COMMENTS

"Great college basketball game. Two teams that have positioned themselves toward the top of the standings early in the season. We battled for long stretches. Really have to give American credit. They have veteran guys with a lot of experience. They stepped up and were extremely tough. The game can be fragile and sometimes that's the difference in a super competitive game.

"We needed this experience. We've got to bring it every single night. We have to be sharp, execute, and play with a brand of toughness. We have another dog fight coming up Wednesday night at Army – a team that has won five in a row and is playing much better of late."

HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED

In a game with 20 lead changes, including 10 in the second half, a driving layup by Brady Cummins capped a 5-0 Raider run and tied the game 73-73. Colgate came up empty on its next two offensive chances before Jones' 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock gave the Eagles the lead for good with just over a minute left.

BACK-AND-FORTH FIRST HALF

Both teams traded their runs in the opening stanza. American jumped out to an early 13-8 lead before Colgate got the three-ball working. Kyle Carlesimo and Chandler Baker each connected on two from long range – and that sparked an 8-0 Raider burst for a 26-19 lead with 8:30 remaining in the first half.

Colgate's lead was still seven, 33-26, when Jones and Rogers scored five points apiece in a 12-2 run, which opened a 37-35 lead for American with 1:12 left in the frame. Woodward closed out the half with baskets on consecutive possessions, and the Raiders led by a pair at the break, 39-37.

Colgate led by as many as five points in the second half and still held a four-point lead, 63-59, after Woodward battled through contact to finish a layup with 5:49 remaining. American shot back with five unanswered after a 3-pointer from Rogers. It was back-and-forth from there down the stretch.

COLGATE SCORING LEADERS

Woodward's 25 points led Colgate's four double-figure scorers on 12-of-19 from the field. Baker finished with 13 points, Carlesimo had 12 on 4-of-4 from behind the arc, and Jalen Cox added 11 points to go with a team-high five assists.

TEAM STATS
  • Colgate shot 48.2 percent from the field (27-56) and was just 2-for-7 from behind the arc in the second half to finish 8-of-19 (42.1%) from long range. American shot 46 percent overall (23-50) and was 6-of-12 from behind the arc in the second half to close out the game 9-for-20 (45%).
  • Free throws were a big difference in the game, with American finishing 26-of-32 from the line (81.3%) to Colgate's 15-of-22 clip (68.2%).
  • The Raiders had 12 turnovers leading to a 23-13 advantage for the Eagles in points of possession changes.

GAME NOTES
  • Jeff Woodward's 25 points were a new career high, besting his 20-point game vs Lehigh (1/8).
  • His 11 rebounds were one shy of his career-high. Seven of those came on the offensive glass.
  • Woodward's double-double was the third of his career and second of the season.
  • Kyle Carlesimo matched his season-high in points with 12 (4-4 3FG)
