Takeaways from Colgate's Road Loss at Penn

Raiders' aerial attack bright spot in 27-17 loss

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Despite historic efforts from wide receivers Treyvon Saunders and Winston Moore, Colgate could not get enough points on the board in a second-half comeback attempt against Penn on the road.

The game wraps up the majority of the Raiders' non-conference games with one more matchup against Merrimack scheduled for Oct. 26.

"Penn always plays good defense and they're good on all three levels,"  Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach Stan Dakosty said. "We knew we had to get the ball outside pretty quick and Trey always puts himself in great positions out there. Overall I think we spread the ball around pretty good, and coming in we knew we were going to need to execute that part of our offensive scheme."

Though the Raiders returned home with a loss, Colgate had multiple players stand out throughout the game. Here are Colgate's standout performances against the Quakers.

TAKEAWAYS
Saunders' plight for success became a problem for Penn, with the junior wide receiver tying the Patriot League record for single-game receptions. Saunders caught the ball 16 times against the Quakers for 123 yards. It also broke the program record for single-game receptions, topping the previous record set by then-junior Corey Hill '99 in 1998.

Sophomore quarterback Jake Stearney made his second start of the season against Penn, picking up 229 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He completed 31 of his 47 attempts, the second-highest completion total in all of college football during Week 5.

Fellow quarterback Zach Osborne led the Raiders on the ground, rushing for 34 yards including a 31-yard scoring scamper — the longest touchdown of his career.

The Raiders had nine players pick up at least one reception during the game, including Saunders' standout showing and sophomore Reed Swanson recording a career-high two receptions.

Special teams had a few glimmering moments, including a season-best 52 yard kick return by Winston Moore. Luke Vologer was 2-for-2 in PATs and 1-for-2 in field goals, and Shelby Pruett averaged 36.7 yards per punt. Pruett pinned Penn inside its 20-yard line twice .

The Raiders' defense forced the Quakers to punt the ball five times, a 5-for-10 third down conversion rate, while Colgate's offense was 5-for-6 on fourth down conversions.

Dane Picariello led Colgate's defense with a career-high eight tackles, including four solo, tying his previous best from the Raiders' visit to Akron in Week 3. Picariello and senior linebacker Mack Marrone both had a half sack for a one-yard loss.
