Colgate Drops Patriot League Opener

Popham Finishes with 3 Saves

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Raiders fell in their Patriot League opener to Bucknell 3-0 in Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday afternoon.

COACH HOKANSON'S COMMENTS

"We faced a very good Bucknell team today who created and finished their chances. I thought outside of the goals, there was a lot of the game that was quite even, and we definitely had some bright moments. They demonstrated why they've been such a formidable force in the league and it's a great benchmark for us to have moving into the rest of conference play. We have a tough opening week so we'll turn our sights on preparing for another difficult test against BU."

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first ten minutes was a cagey affair with both teams feeling each other out and not giving much room in the attacking third.

In the 17th minute, Bucknell were able to round the corner on the left side and take an open shot on Alli Popham but Popham made a huge stop keeping the score level at zero.

26 minutes in, Popham was called into action again as a Bucknell free kick was dipping down under the crossbar before Popham tipped it over safely.

Just two minutes before halftime, Bucknell was able to get behind the Colgate defense and poke the ball past the outstretched leg of Popham, finding the bottom left corner.

Bucknell led 1-0 at the half, Popham made three saves in the first 45 minutes.

Buckell doubled its lead two minutes into the second half with a long range effort finding the right corner.

The Raiders best chance of the game came in the 50th minute when the Bison defense poorly cleared a ball falling to the feet of Bianca Howitt. Howitt fired at the goal but it went wide right.

Ella Poppinga entered the game nine minutes into the second half and played the rest of the match in between the pipes.

In the 67th minute, Jade Vieira turned her defender and struck an effort from 30 yards away towards the target but the Bucknell keeper was able to tip the shot over the bar.

Ten minutes later, Demi Maroudas cut inside on her right foot and fired a shot into the Bucknell keeper's hands.

With just under five minutes left, Bucknell scored its third of the game.

Colgate was unable to get on the board and fell 3-0 in Lewisburg, Pa.
