BRONX, N.Y. — A late surge saw Colgate pull within one, but it could not find an equalizer, falling 3-2 at Fordham Sunday afternoon.
"I'm happy the guys kept pushing to the end, and nearly equalized. This experience will make us a better team. I'm looking forward to a full week of training to get ready for Binghamton," said head coach
Erik Ronning.
Jack Beerling scored his second goal of the year in the 86th minute to cut the deficit to one. Following a corner kick, the sophomore had an initial attempt blocked, but he stuck with it and fired another from outside the box that snuck into the bottom left corner.
Colgate had one final attempt with a minute to play when Beerling played a perfect ball into the box but Liam Winograd put his header just inches wide of the goal.
The Raiders previously had a corner in the 81st minute following a shot from Wade Johnson that they could not convert. Colgate also had a chance in the 79th minute when Aidan Wright ripped one off a free kick from 25 yards out, but it landed off target.
The Raiders' first goal came in the 12th minute after getting awarded a penalty kick. Winograd challenged a fifty-fifty ball and got taken down by the goalkeeper to earn the PK. Alex St. John's penalty attempt was stopped on a low diving save, but the first-year followed his rebound and tapped it in for his first career goal, putting Colgate ahead 1-0.
Fordham equalized in the 36th minute when Daniel D'Ippolito ripped one from inside the right corner of the box that found the side netting.
Just under two minutes into the second, Fordham took a 2-1 lead. Thomas Gray played a lofted ball from the Rams' defensive end that Andre Insalaco just got his foot on and tapped past Oliver Townend after he came off his line.
The Rams expanded their lead to two in the 75th minute thanks to a strike from Lucas Hackaa.
In the 63rd minute, Beerling tried one from outside the box that flew over the goal.
The Raiders had a couple of other chances during the first half. Just under two minutes in, Wright took a rip that was a routine save for the keeper. In the 18th minute, Toby Goldner flicked a header on goal off a throw-in, but it got stopped.
Townend finished with three saves in the game. He made a beautiful one-handed save on a shot following a corner in the 67th minute. Townend also stopped a shot from distance eight minutes into the second. The senior made a diving save with 29 minutes left in the first on an attempt from outside the box.
