Colgate Draws Cornell in Home Opener

Ari Bezanson Scores Raiders Lone Goal

HAMILTON - Ari Bezanson scored the Raiders lone goal early in the match as Colgate finished with a 1-1 draw against Cornell on Sunday afternoon's home opener.

Bezanson opened her 2024 goalscoring account just under ten minutes into the match but Cornell was able to find a late equalizer.

COACH HOKANSON'S COMMENTS

"Tough to come away with a draw in what I felt was overall a good performance from the team today. Credit to Cornell for finding an equalizer late, it was an exceptional goal for them. I thought back to front we had some really good things and we keep moving in the right direction."

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Raiders got off the mark early netting their second goal of the season just under ten minutes into the first half. Jocelyn Rowe struck the crossbar from 25 yards away forcing a scramble in the Cornell 18-yard box. Ari Bezanson took advantage, looping the ball over the Cornell goalkeeper, putting Colgate up 1-0.

Alli Popham made an impressive reaction save 20 minutes into the half as the ball found a Big Red striker just 12 yards away from the Raiders keeper. Popham sprung to her right pushing the ball wide for Olivia Anderson to clear it away.

Popham finished the half with six saves while the Raiders attack managed to get three shots on target. Cornell held a 2-1 advantage on corners in the first 45 minutes.

Ella Poppinga started the second half in net for the Raiders making an early save to keep Colgate ahead.

The first 15 minutes of the second frame were played through the midfield with little chances coming in front of goal for either side.

In the 65th minute, Anna Keeling fired a free kick from 30 yards away forcing the Cornell goalkeeper to parry the ball over the crossbar.

With just under five minutes to play, Cornell's Abigail Bishara hit a half volley from 35 yards away that nestled into the top right corner. The equalizing goal came just at the nick of the time for the Big Red as the game finished 1-1.
