Colgate Falls to St. John's

Alli Popham Makes Eight Saves

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Raiders were unable to find the back of the net on Sunday afternoon as Colgate fell 2-0 to St. John's at Belson Stadium.

COACH HOKANSON'S COMMENTS

"We knew this weekend was going to be a challenge up against two quality teams. I'm disappointed that our biggest foe this weekend was us - some lapses and moments where I felt we weren't sharp enough and good teams will make you pay for those moments. Today's second half, like Thursday, showed some glimpses of what our team is capable of and I think we had St. John's on their heels in moments. We're creating chances, which is positive, and I'm hoping we can start to convert them into production as the season goes on. Back to another week of training in preparation for a tough game on the weekend vs Cornell, but I know the girls are up for it and excited to be back on Beyer-Small."

HOW IT HAPPENED

St. John's scored the opening goal just over five minutes into the match. Alli Popham was able to make a save on the initial attempt but the rebound was fired in.

The Raiders responded with a spell of attacking play including a tight angle strike from Ana Schremp.

Alli Popham made six saves in the first half including a strong perry over the crossbar from point blank range.

St. John's outshot the Raiders 14-2 in the first half and held a 7-2 corner advantage after 45 minutes.

Ava McCloskey found the end of a through ball and ripped a shot forcing a Red Storm save eight minutes into the second frame.

In the 66th minute, St. John's doubled its lead converting a penalty after a Colgate handball.

Bianca Howitt created a chance for Gillian Yonce on the top of the box but the shot from Yonce went left of the target. In the 71st minute, Howitt took an ambitious effort from 30 yards away forcing another save from the Red Storm goalkeeper.

At the 81st minute mark, Cate Childers created Colgate's best chance of the afternoon slicing a shot towards the bottom right corner but the St. John's keep was equal to it making another save.

Colgate was unable to find a breakthrough goal and fell 2-0 to St. John's in Queens, N.Y.

Popham finished with eight saves in 90 minutes of action. St. John's outshot the Raiders 19-8 including 10-5 on target.
