Raiders Drop Season Opener to Stony Brook

Ana Schremp Scores Lone Goal

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Ana Schremp scored the Raiders lone goal 33 minutes into the first half, but Colgate was unable to hang on as the Raiders fell 2-1 to Stony Brook in their season opener on Thursday night.

COACH HOKANSON'S COMMENTS
"It's always tough going down a player, but I felt as though our team responded very well. I'm really proud of how we fought and dug regardless.  We also were able to really leverage the depth we have when we were down which makes me super optimistic. There were positives to take, and learning moments for sure, but that's what the first weekend is for. Looking forward to seeing how we implement what we've taken from tonight into another very tough opponent on Sunday in St. John's."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stony Brook struck first just 5:24 into the match after a turnover in the midfield, the Seawolves took advantage of a two on one to go ahead 1-0.

The Raiders responded immediately with some pressure forcing two saves from the Stony Brook goalkeeper. Nikki DiCaprio found a rebound on the top of the box and ripped a volley that was headed towards the frame before it was deflected away for a corner.

Cara Schmidlein found Ana Schremp on a breakaway with just over ten minutes left in the first half. Schremp used her pace to skip past the Seawolves goalkeeper and calmly pass the ball into the back of the net, finding the breakthrough for the Raiders.

Stony Brook edged the Raiders in shots 9-5, while Colgate took a 2-0 corner advantage into the break.

The Seawolves netted their second of the match just over two minutes into the second half to take a 2-1 lead.

Ella Poppinga took a gamble on a through ball and arrived a second too late causing a collision with the Stony Brook striker forcing the referee to pull out the red card. The Raiders were forced to play the remaining 38 minutes down one player.

Even down to 10 women, Colgate continued to put pressure on the Seawolves. Cate Childers found a window to fire a shot on target but Stony Brook goalkeeper, Nicolette Pasquarella, was able to smother it.

The Raiders were able to match the Seawolves with seven shots apiece in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net as Colgate fell in the season opener 2-1 to Stony Brook.
