Softball Splits Day Two of Hatter Classic

Herbst logs four hits as Raiders beat Wildcats, fall to Bluejays

DELAND, Fla.  — Junior infielder Jillian Herbst batted .571 on the day as the Raiders dominated Bethune-Cookman, 9-0, and were edged by Creighton, 3-2, in the second day of the Hatter Classic. First-year Kiley Shelton and fifth-year Adrienne Nardone also saw the ball well on Saturday, with Shelton racking up three hits and Nardone batting .250 across both outings.

Game 1 - Colgate 9, Bethune-Cookman 0

To open game one, leadoff hitter Rachel Carney put herself on first and promptly stole second before Jillian Herbst poked her fourth hit in as many at-bats. The Raiders scored the first run of the day two batters later when Kara Fusco tallied an RBI with a sacrifice fly which allowed Carney to tag-up from third.

Bailey Misken successfully worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second stanza that led to a game-changing third inning for the Raiders at the plate.

Herbst continued her hot streak with a single to right field, allowing Shelton to rack up two RBIs when she lifted a homer over the right field wall.

The bottom of Colgate's batting order went on to tally an additional insurance run when Niamh Dougherty earned her first-career RBI, a double in the gap that scored Nardone, who tallied her 100th career hit in the win, from first.

Misken only conceded one hit across the next three innings, allowing the Raiders to carry a four-run lead into the final frame.

Amanda DeSantis drew a walk to kick off another Raider rally in the top of the inning, leading to a three-RBI triple from Herbst to blow the game open.

Shelton knocked in her third RBI of the morning with a single that scored Herbst, and Kara Fusco continued the hot streak with an RBI double.

Misken finished off her complete game shutout by forcing two dribblers and a lackluster line drive, ending her outing with four hits, three strikeouts and no earned runs on 122 pitches. She now moves into fourth place for most career shutouts in program history with 13.

Game 2 - Colgate 2, Creighton 3

Game two started fast as Carney logged a hit in the first at-bat of the afternoon, but Creighton struck first after holding the Raiders scoreless and tallying two scores of their own in the bottom of the opening inning.

Both teams were held hitless in the second before Herbst continued to swing the barrel up pitches with a two-out single in the third. Colgate was unable to send Herbst around, however, and trailed by two until Fusco singled up the middle to open the fourth inning.

Pinch runner Dani Rosner advanced on a wild pitch and scored Colgate's first run of the game when Quinn Livesay shot a single through the heart of the Bluejay's defense.

Colgate did not stay within one run for long after Creighton stretched their lead with a walk and back-to-back base hits in the bottom of the fourth.

A quick response from the Raiders in the fifth saw Nardone knock in Shelton with an RBI single, but it was as close as Colgate would get.

The Raiders were able to apply some pressure in the sixth when Dougherty was hit by a pitch, but pinch runner Claire Whalen was thrown out trying to steal second.

After Herbst walked to open the final frame, the Raiders were retired in order to drop to 3-6 on the season.
