River Hawks Pull Away from Raiders

Antonio Fernandez gives Colgate 1-0 lead but UML scores five unanswered

LOWELL, Mass. — Colgate went ahead 1-0 the first period, but five unanswered goals helped UMass Lowell take a 5-2 victory over the Raiders Friday evening at the Tsongas Center.

COACH HARDER'S COMMENTS
"Our lack of experience is definitely hurting us right now. We will keep getting better and keep making the necessary adjustments to find ways to win."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Antonio Fernandez lit the lamp just over halfway through the first after Simon Labelle took it down the ice before playing a pass to the sophomore.
  • The River Hawks scored five unanswered to take a 5-1 lead. It started with a power play tally from Owen Cole off assists from Jak Vaarwerk and Isac Jonsson at the 7:07 mark of the opening period.
  • Five minutes later, Mitchell Becker put one in, giving UMass Lowell a 2-1 advantage.
  • UML added two more in the second frame to extend its lead. Scout Truman made it 3-1 River Hawks six minutes into the period. Nine minutes later, Chris Delaney found the back of the net, putting the score at 4-1.
  • Colgate had an early power play in the third and pulled its goalie to go up two men, but it backfired. Former Raider Pierson Brandon, who is using his fifth year of eligibility at UML, fired a shot the length of the ice into the empty net just under two minutes into the period, making it 5-1.
  • Brett Chorske stopped the River Hawks' run when he scored off Max Nagel's first career assist with just over seven minutes left in the third.
  • Colgate also had a man-up chance in the first and another in the third that it could not convert.

GAME NOTES
  • Fernandez scored for the second straight game. He now leads the teams with three goals.
  • Andrew Takacs made 29 saves in goal.
  • Nagel became the fifth first-year and sixth player to record their first career point this season.
  • Colgate has now had 11 different players score a goal, and 17 players record a point.
