Raiders Rally to Overcome Greyhounds

Alexa Brodie’s 21 points help Colgate win opening Patriot League game

BALTIMORE – The Colgate Women's Basketball team rallied behind Alexa Brodie's 21 points and a fourth quarter comeback to top Loyola, 73-65, Wednesday night at Reitz Arena in both teams' Patriot League opener.

COACH ADEDUNTAN'S COMMENTS

"I'm really proud of our effort tonight. We battled and were resilient the entire game. I thought Loyola played really well and competed. I'm especially proud of the way we sustained and had a really well-balanced effort. Alexa Brodie played really well and carried us throughout the game, but we had different people step up in big moments."

HOW IT HAPPENED

A back-and-forth affair saw the Raiders race out to a 21-11 lead in the dying moments of the first quarter thanks to seven points from Madison Schiller and five from Taylor Golembiewski and Morgan McMahon. Colgate's lead extended to as many as 12 points in the second quarter, but the Greyhounds began to creep back into the game as the half closed.

The margin was down to half a dozen at the break, then a 5-0 run from the Greyhounds in the latter stages of the third quarter also included the first lead change of the game since the opening basket. Loyola's lead reached five with 1:15 left in the quarter, but Colgate kept them at bay thanks to McMahon and Tiasia McMillan. The pair knocked down back-to-back shots on the Raiders' final two possessions before the horn to trim the deficit to one with 10 minutes to play.

Brodie gave Colgate the lead back at 59-58 just 1:08 into the fourth, but Loyola regained the one-point edge just over a minute later. The sides played scoreless for nearly two minutes following the lead change, then the dam broke. A pair of Golembiewski free throws put the Raiders in front with 5:32 left then six straight points busted the game open to create a lead Colgate never relinquished.

Loyola stopped the run with a free throw to bring the score to 67-61 with 1:54 remaining, but the Greyhounds never got any closer as the Raider defense shut them down and held them to just one field goal in the entire fourth quarter.

Brodie's season-high 21 points included nine in the fourth quarter with five of those contributed from the charity stripe.

Schiller (12), Golembiewski (11) and McMillan (10) all finished in double figures scoring on the evening. McMillan also dished out a single game career-high six assists.

Sophia Diehl led the Raiders with eight rebounds and continues to lead the team with 5.7 boards per game. She is also averaging 8.0 rebounds per game during her last five outings.

Colgate is now on its second three-game winning streak of the season and is a winner in four of its last five games.
