Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Quinn Schmidt

Raiders Beat by Bulldogs

Two first-half goals too much to overcome for Colgate

NEW HAVEN, CONN.  — Colgate men's soccer fell on the road in non-conference action, losing to Yale, 2-0. Senior goalkeeper Andrew Cooke made four saves while seven shots came from six different Raiders offensively, the most shots without scoring a goal in a game so far this season for Colgate.

Senior forward Aidan Davock registered the first shot attempt of the game in the fifth minute, but the Bulldogs immediately countered with intense offensive pressure. Sophomore midfielder Cason Stafford temporarily thwarted the attack with two goal line blocks, but the ball ricocheted to the foot of Yale's junior defender TJ Prethus who was fouled in the box. After the penalty kick found nylon, the Bulldogs led 1-0 after 12 minutes of action.

The Raiders did not let the goal deter them from Head Coach Erik Ronning's game plan as they continued to work the ball from the outside in to find a few great looks at the net.

Junior forward Alejandro Coury nearly drilled the equalizer after finding some space at the top of the box in the 29th minute, but his shot went just wide of the net. Not even five minutes later, Colgate saw its best chance of the night when first-year forward Charlie Yates plucked the ball from a Yale defender in the final third, playing a beautiful pass to Coury just in front of the net.

Coury took a touch before laying up a beautiful service to Stafford just feet in front of the goalkeeper, but Yale's Chris Edwards made a remarkable save to preserve the Bulldogs' advantage. Yale then doubled their lead with a goal just 60 seconds before halftime.

The second frame saw the physicality pick up with the teams combining for 10 fouls and two yellow cards in the final 45 minutes. The slugfest saw a handful of promising opportunities for both sides, but ultimately Yale was able to control the pace of play and prevent Colgate from winning two games in a row for the first time since September of last year.
