POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Men's soccer dropped its first contest of the 2023 season on Sunday night, falling to the Marist Red Foxes, 3-1. Senior forward
Aidan Davock knocked in his first goal of the season while first-year defender
Connor Cates recorded his second career assist.
Marist was firing on all cylinders from the onset, beating the Colgate backline twice in the first 20 minutes of play. Junior forward Jared Juleau diced through multiple Colgate defenders and delivered a pinpoint pass to freshman Kyle Evans for the first score, and Richard Morel doubled the home team's advantage just four minutes later.
"We dug ourselves a hole early but fought hard in the second half and immediately got back in the game," Head Coach Erik Ronning said about the loss. "The urgency and intent displayed in the second half must be the standard for 90 minutes."
After conceding the first two goals of the match, the Raiders found their groove coming out of the halftime locker room. Four quick corners translated to a good look for junior midfielder Mason Pahule in front of the net, but he was unable to convert the chance.
Just over 10 minutes into the second frame, Colgate's up-tempo offense broke through when Cates found Davock by the near post to cut the Red Foxes' lead to one. Marist and Colgate continued to trade blows for the rest of the half, racking up 20 and 16 fouls, respectively, to go along with four yellow cards each.
Senior goalkeeper Andrew Cooke made a dazzling save on a screamer from Juleau in the 78th minute to keep the momentum alive, but the decisive blow would come just seconds after when
a cross deflected off a Raider defender for an own goal.
