Colgate Drops Close Game to Lafayette

Senior Rachel Carney and Taylor Ludwick recorded home runs against Lafayettes

HAMILTON – Colgate softball dropped a 4-3 nail biter to Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at the Eaton Street Field.

Home runs dictated the game, as five were scored in total, and the go-ahead run for the Leopards was a homer in the sixth.

Lafayette started the scoring with a home run to left field to take an early one-run lead in the opening inning of the game.

Senior Rachel Carney retaliated in the bottom of the first with a bomb to right field off a 3-1 count to notch the game up at one. Looking to continue Carney's momentum, Kara Fusco singled, Steph Jacoby reached base off a fielder's choice, and Quinn Livesay singled. Eventually, the Leopards got the two remaining outs in the inning to leave the Raiders stranded.

Senior Bailey Misken and the defense recorded three quick outs in the top of the second, including a strikeout from Misken to close the inning.

Colgate took its first lead of the game in the second after Adrienne Nardone started the offense with a triple to right field to put herself in scoring position and force Lafayette to make a pitching change. Elizabeth Nitka walked and then advanced on the next two-at bats to have two Raiders on base. Sophomore Jillian Herbst slammed a single to third base to finally bring Nardone home and push Colgate ahead 2-1.

The back-and-forth offense continued in the third as the Leopards tied the game at two off a double before the Raiders answered in the bottom of the inning after Taylor Ludwick homered to left field to break the tie at 3-2.

The game stayed in Colgate's favor till the fifth inning, as the Leopards hit their second home run of the day to even the score for the third time at three runs apiece. Livesay tried to gain the run back in the bottom of the fifth after she doubled to center field, but she was eventually left stranded.

Lafayette went on to hit another home run in the sixth to take a one-run lead that forced Mia Edwards to enter the game in relief of Misken and get the three outs of the inning. The Raiders tried to warm the bats up in the bottom of the sixth as Nitka singled and Carney walked, but the Leopards' defense stayed strong to hold the score at 4-3.

Colgate was looking to repeat Friday's walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh as Ludwick hit a double to right center with two outs on the board. Unfortunately, Lafayette prevailed to keep the score at its final tally of 4-3 and record its first Patriot League series win of the season.
