Boston Bests Colgate to Close Out Series

Steph Jacoby records her 100th career hit in doubleheader against Boston University

BOSTON, Mass. – Colgate softball wrapped up its three-game series with Boston University on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders fell 6-5 in eight innings before being bested 6-1 in game two of the doubleheader.

Boston scored 12 runs, including a walk-off home run, to stay undefeated in Patriot League play and win its 22nd straight game.

Steph Jacoby led the Raider offense, slamming a homer and raking in four RBI while going 3-for-6 at the plate.

GAME 1 | Boston 6, Colgate 5

Jacoby was the first Raider to reach base in the top of the second, recording her 100th career hit with a double to left center.

Boston struck first offensively, adding two runs to the board in the bottom of the second and another in the third to lead 3-0.

Colgate warmed up its bat in the fourth, as Jillian Herbst opened the inning with a single before she advanced on the next at-bat after Kara Fusco walked. Herbst scored off a fielding error to cut the lead to two, then pinch-runner Dani Rosner scored off a sacrifice fly from Jacoby to slash the deficit to 3-2. The Terriers responded in the bottom half of the inning, adding an unearned run to extend their lead to two again.

Alexis Romero was the next Raider to score after she reached base, then advanced off an error. Rachel Carney hit a sacrifice bunt that pushed Romero to third, and Herbst singled to score her fellow sophomore to put Colgate behind by a run at 4-3.

Senior Jacoby hit a two-run homer to give the Raiders their first lead at 5-4 in the top of the sixth, but Boston tied it up at five in the bottom of the inning.

Both defenses held strong in the seventh, as Colgate went down in order, and pitcher Alexa Acker left a Terrier stranded with a strikeout to extend the contest.

Boston took the game in the eighth after retiring the Raider bats in order and then hitting a walk-off home run to push the score to its final tally of 6-5.

GAME 2 | Boston 6, Colgate 1

Opposite to the first game, Colgate got on the board first in the second half of the twin bill. Senior Carney scored the sole Raider run of the game in the top of the first after reaching the bags from a walk and stolen base. Jacoby singled to the right to bring Carney home to tally her fourth and final RBI of the day.

The Raiders held Boston scoreless in the first two innings after back-to-back outs from Carney closed out the first, and pitcher Bailey Misken struck out a batter to end the second.

Boston went on tie the game up at one in the bottom of the third off a fielder's choice.

The Raider bats tried to get warm in the top of the fourth to take the lead back as Quinn Livesay and Adrienne Nardone hit singles while Elizabeth Nitka reached on a fielder's choice in three straight at-bats. Unfortunately, the Terriers' defense prevailed to get the final two outs to shut down any other offensive opportunities for Colgate.

The Terrier run scored in the bottom of the third was the spark Boston needed as they went on to score five more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the day and the series with a 6-1 win.
