Softball Drops Doubleheader to League Best

Senior Taylor Ludwick scored two runs to lead the Raider offense against Patriot League-leading Lehigh

HAMILTON – Colgate softball dropped a pair of games to the Patriot League-leading Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders lost 10-7 in 10 innings before falling 5-0 in game two of the twin bill.

After being tied at seven runs for three innings, the Mountain Hawks scored three runs in the top of the 10th to take game one, then scored five unanswered runs in the second game of the day to remain undefeated in conference play.

Senior Taylor Ludwick led the Raider offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate to go along with two runs.

GAME 1 | Lehigh 10, Colgate 7

The Raider bats were hot to start the day as Colgate scored four runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Senior Adrienne Nardone opened the scoring with a two-run homer to left center. Back-to-back fielder's choices scored Quinn Livesay and Ludwick, who reached base in the previous two at-bats to put Colgate up 4-0 after one.

Senior Bailey Misken and the defense put the Lehigh batters down in order in the top of the second and third inning to keep the Mountain Hawks off the board. Ludwick scored her second run of the game in the bottom of the third after opening the inning with a double. Sophomore Jillian Herbst hit a sacrifice bunt, and senior Steph Jacoby grounded out to advance Ludwick home and extend the lead to five runs.

The Mountain Hawks broke their scoring drought in the fourth with a single and sac-fly to cut the deficit to 5-2. The runs seemed to cause a spark in Lehigh as they went on to score four more runs in the fifth to take a one-run lead.

The game would get knotted up in the seventh after the Mountain Hawks scored what they thought was a security run to lead 7-5. Fortunately for Colgate, the Raiders retaliated in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game up at seven. Pinch runners Bailey Burns and Claire Whalen accounted for the two Raider runs.

Both pitchers held their own in the eighth and ninth innings as Misken left three runners stranded, and the Raiders were put down in order. The Lehigh bats once again got hot in the 10th inning as they scored three runs to take the lead and the game at 10-7 as Colgate's offense couldn't reach base in the bottom half of the 10th.

GAME 2 | Lehigh 5, Colgate 0

Unlike the first game, Lehigh got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in both the first and second inning to lead 4-0.

Whalen was the first Raider to reach base in the game after singling to third base in the bottom of the second but was left stranded after back-to-back outs.

The Mountain Hawks scored the final run of the day in the third off a fielding error to push their lead to 5-0.

Colgate tried to get the bats hot in the bottom of the fifth as Jacoby singled down the left-field line to open the inning. Elizabeth Nitka was the next to single and advanced pinch runner Alexis Romero, but both were left stranded after two quick outs.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, their five-run deficit was too much to overcome as the Mountain Hawks took the game 5-0 in the seventh to win their eighth straight Patriot League game.
