Raiders Erase Three-Goal Deficit, Win Game 1

Colton Young Nets Overtime Game-Winner in 4-3 Victory Over St. Lawrence

HAMILTON — Colgate erased a three-goal deficit topped off by an overtime game-winning goal from Colton Young to defeat St. Lawrence 4-3 in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals Friday.

The Raiders fell behind 3-0 in the first period but held the Saints scoreless for the remainder of the game and fought their way back. It was the first time since Jan. 4, 2019, that Colgate overcame a three-goal deficit when they did so against Quinnipiac.

Young notched the game-winner with 8:24 remaining in the extra period.  Tommy Bergsland passed to Ross Mitton, who hit the puck ahead to Young. The senior flicked a shot in the net as he was falling to give Colgate the win.

Daniel Panetta tied the game up at 3-3 with 9:08 left in the third. Colton Young passed to Nick Anderson, who fired a shot that Panetta redirected from out in front to knot it up.

Colgate picked up a big penalty kill with three minutes remaining in the final period, preventing a chance for the Saints to pull back ahead.

The second period saw two goals from the Raiders as they cut the deficit to one. Reid Irwin notched his first goal in a Colgate uniform at the 13:33 mark to make it 3-2.

Alex Young put Colgate on the board when he scored with under 12 minutes remaining. Colton Young hit one off the boards ahead to the junior, who skated in and tucked a shot between the goalie and the right post.

Carter Gylander held the Saints scoreless for the final two-plus periods. This included a strong second-period performance when he stopped 17 shots. He also made some clutch saves in the third, including denying SLU on a breakaway chance. The junior finished with 28 stops in the game.

In the first, St. Lawrence netted three goals in five minutes to take a 3-0 lead. Cameron Buhl scored with 10:47 remaining in the first to put the Saints ahead.

Three minutes later, Tucker McIntosh netted one off of passes from Jan Lasak and Max Dorrington to double the Saints' lead. Aleksi Peltonen made it 3-0 at the 14:34 mark when he received a pass from Lasak, got free on a breakaway, and slotted a shot into the goal.

The Raiders outshot the Saints 37-31 in the game.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"Wow. What a game and what a comeback. I am so proud of how we stayed with it and found a way to claw our way back into that game. Our leadership guys were great tonight, especially after the first period. We settled things down and got back to work. The game-winner was just a great individual effort by Colton. Now the message after the game was the same as if things had gone the other way. You need to win two games to advance. We will hit reset and get ready to go to battle again tomorrow."

UP NEXT
Colgate will go for a series sweep Saturday when they take on the Saints in Game 2 of the best-of-three series. Puck drop is 7 p.m. inside Appleton Arena.
