Raiders Crush Crusaders 60-56 on the Road

Colgate topped Holy Cross for the first time since the 2019-20 season

WORCESTER, Mass. – Colgate women's basketball crushed Holy Cross 60-56 in Worcester for the first time since 2019-20 to split the season series with the Crusaders.

Junior Tiasia McMillan led the offense with 15 points to win the most valuable player award in Holy Cross' Winter Homecoming game. McMillan sank 7-of-16 field goals and captured four rebounds to end the day. Senior Alexa Brodie tallied 10 points to round out the double-digit scoring. Sophomore Taylor Golembiewski captured a team-high nine boards.

The Raiders shot 50 percent from the field in the second and third quarters, going 15-for-30, with five coming from McMillan to give Colgate the edge in today's game.

Colgate started a 10-4 run at 8:35 of the first to put the Raiders ahead 10-7 with 4:31 on the clock. McMillan and Golembiewski scored two baskets apiece, while Sophia Diehl sank one in the run. The Crusader slashed the run with a layup, but the Raiders responded with five points with 2:16 left of the period. Holy Cross drained a layup to end the first behind 15-11.

Back-to-back baskets from Jenna Paul and Madison Schiller extended the lead to eight to open the second. Holy Cross got on the board with an 8-4 run to cut the lead to four at 23-19. Brodie broke the run, but Holy Cross answered with three quick field goals to tie the game at 25.

The Raiders closed out the second with a 6-4 run, with two baskets coming from McMillan to give Colgate a 31-39 lead at the break.

McMillan, Brodie, and Diehl opened the second half with a 6-2 run to push Colgate ahead by eight. Diehl drained a trey to bump the lead to its first double-digit deficit, then Brodie scored a jumper to bring the score to 42-31 with 3:42 on the clock.

McMillan scored the Raiders' seventh straight point to extend the lead to 13 with 1:34 left of the third. Holy Cross broke the burst with a 7-2 run that lasted the rest of the quarter to trail 46-38.

With 7:36 left of the fourth, Holy Cross went on an 8-1 run to trail by three at 51-48 with 4:25 on the clock. Golembiewski and Schiller scored back-to-back field goals to lengthen the lead to seven, but six quick points from the Crusaders cut the deficit to one at 55-54 with 21 seconds left.

Diehl and McMillan scored three fast points to push the lead to four with 17 seconds on the clock. The Crusaders answered with a layup to trail by two, but back-to-back fouls on Holy Cross allowed Brodie to score a pair of free throws to crush any thoughts of a comeback with Colgate ahead 60-56 to end the game.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Women's Basketball Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan

"My team came ready to play today. We started the game following and executing our game and were hitting on all cylinders. One of the things that stood out the most in our game was our effort and crashing the boards offensively.

"It was nice to see so many people step up for us, both offensively and defensively. Tiasia McMillan played a great game and a solid 40 minutes. She scored, defended, and grabbed rebounds. Despite illness, Alexa Brodie stepped up and led us like she has done all season.

"Winning is never easy. I think back to our most recent setback and how we were able to grow from it quickly and finish out against a really good team in Holy Cross. My hope is that we continue to build from today's success and make a run as the season closes out."
