Men's Hockey Battles Cornell

Raiders Fall 3-2 in Ithaca

ITHACA , N.Y. — Colgate fell 3-2 at No. 11 Cornell Friday evening in ECAC Hockey action.

The Raiders got goal contributions from Matt Verboon and Ethan Manderville. Verboon tallied two points on the night as he also picked up an assist on Manderville's goal. Nick Anderson also notched an assist on both of the goals.

Verboon scored on a power play with 8:51 remaining in the third to make it a one-goal game. The senior ripped a shot into the right of the goal off of passes from Anderson and Alex Young.

Manderville put Colgate ahead 1-0 seven minutes into the first.  After a shot from Verboon got saved, Manderville was able to finish one off the rebound.  Anderson picked up a secondary assist on the play.

The senior's goal game after Cornell got called for a pair of penalties just over a minute apart from each other, giving the Raiders a two-man advantage.

The Big Red scored three goals in the first three minutes of the second period to take a two-goal lead. Zach Tupker netted one 30 seconds into the period to tie the game up at 1-1. A minute later, Kyle Penny found the back of the net to give Cornell the lead. Sullivan Mack then topped off the scoring parade when he put one in at the 17:07 mark to make it 3-1.

Colgate had one power play chance in the second on a holding call at the 11:43 mark, but it could not capitalize. The Raiders also had a man-up chance in the third that they could not score on.

Colgate's penalty kill unit went three-for-three on the night, with all three kills coming in the opening period, preventing the Big Red from scoring an early goal.

Carter Gylander stopped 26 shots in net for the Raiders.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"It was a battle. There were hard minutes played by a lot of guys on both teams tonight. It's a difficult building to play in for visitors. We talked a lot about them feeding off the crowd and their tendency to strike quickly. It hurt to give up a goal 30 seconds into the second period and two quick ones after that. We used our timeout to settle things down, and I thought we responded well afterward. They don't give you a lot, but we did generate some grade-A chances and battled to the end. We get another chance tomorrow, and we will be ready."
