NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Colgate scored five goals in the third period to pick up a dominating 7-1 victory over Yale Saturday evening at Ingalls Rink.
The Raiders earned their first ECAC Hockey win of the season. It was also the first league victory for head coach Mike Harder. Seven different skaters scored for Colgate, and the five goals in the third marks the most the team has tallied in a period this season.
"This was an important test for our group to pass. We are also super happy to have capped off a great Saturday for Colgate Athletics with our teams going 5-0. Congrats to all our fantastic student-athletes," said Harder.
Six Raiders tallied multi-point performances, led by
Tommy Bergsland and
Brett Chorske, who each registered three assists.
Pierson Brandon and
Alex DiPaolo notched two helpers, while
Nick Anderson logged a goal and an assist.
Colgate went ahead 1-0 just over seven minutes into the opening period when
Daniel Panetta put in his first goal of the season. The Raiders struck again 53 seconds into the second after
Ross Mitton ripped one from just past the blue line.
Yale scored its lone goal with 2:39 left in the middle stanza to cut the lead to one at 2-1.
Colgate then opened the floodgates in the third, putting five pucks in the back of the net. Just over a minute in, Anderson recorded his first of the year. Five minutes later,
Ryan McGuire scored on a power play to make it a three-goal game at 4-1.
Nic Belpedio kept the momentum going when he fired one in from outside the left faceoff circle at the 9:59 mark. Less than a minute and a half later, first-year
Jake Schneider got in on the action for Colgate's sixth goal of the night.
Ben Raymond topped off the scoring with 34 seconds left when he deked out the goalie and tapped in a shot.
The Raiders prevented the Bulldogs from creating many chances besides the one goal. Yale had four power plays on the night that Colgate's penalty kill unit shut down.
Carter Gylander did not get tested too much, but the senior finished with 23 saves in net after making 10 stops in the second period.
